Just depends on what kind of roads you drive on. City driving can take its toll. Accelerating a 5000+ lbs vehicle takes quite a bit of energy and using the brakes throws that energy away. You can try to anticipate lights ahead of you better (do be reasonable) so that you can minimize how much you have to brake. Driving at lower speeds tends to conserve more fuel as well. The faster you go, the more aerodynamic resistance there is. Its not linearly proportional to speed so the amount of aerodynamic resistance at 80 mph will be 4 times the amount at 40 mph. Not saying to drive at 40 on the highway, but its just so you have an idea of the effect of speed. And the amount of aerodynamic resistance in a truck or SUV is already higher than in a coupe or sedan. Not to mention higher speeds also means higher engine speeds. Higher engine speeds are also subject to higher aerodynamic resistance to the engine's internal parts as it has to cut through the air inside the engine. The reality is big vehicles are simply not conducive to great gas mileage. I get about 12 mpg in the Titan.
