MPG for EX35 2008 JOURNEY AWD

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Since i`m 99% user of the manual mode, I decided to drive on D mode from Chicago to Milwaukee last night. Since the freakin` gas price here are closer to $4 a gallon AGAIN :tisk: . So I drove a long 70miles stretch on D mode and ON cruise control. I reset the dash for Miles Per Gallon and the highest i got was 26.2 MPG. This is a 2008 AWD Journey with 35 psi tire pressure, 3/4 level on the gas gauge.

I was surprised bec. I thought the Journey AWD only goes up to 24MPG on the highway. At 65MPH (cruising) this thing gets 26 miles per gallon and at 70MPH (cruising) it get`s 25.8 MPG.

I just did this for the first time after owning my ride since Sept. 2008 (BTW, I normally used Premium fuel 93 octane, but this time I was using the mid grade 89)

Just my observation.

My usual mixed city/highway MPG on 99% manual mode is 19-20MPG. I was really suprise that this car is capable of 26.2MPG if driven lightly... ;)

The MPG digital gauge I`m talking about is the center dash. It both shows MILES PER GALLON and Gallon per hour ? something like that, I just can`t remember the bottom one... Same location for outside temp.

Yeah... I too, getting frustrated w/ the $4.3/gallon here in California. Everything I fill up the tank (Premium),it cost me almost 80 dollars! Going for lower octane may save me a few bucks but not by much (probably w/ a diff of 10c / gallon, 18gallon fill up will save me <$2). But if I go w/ 87 octane (than 89), it'll save me 20C / gallon, that equates to about $4 / fill up (equates to about 1 gallon gas then). IF the same 18 gallon (we have 20 gallon tank..but I usually fill up around 17-18 gallon empty) gets me a difference < 25miles, then going for premium vs regular is pointless. I've learnt to go 'very' light footed these days, but avg (mix city/highway) gets me about 23-24MPG (on a RWD car). Tough choice.

Has anyone noticed the MPG indicators, the center dash and the LCD, the numbers don't match? These numbers also do not match real world calculation...miles driven/gallons used.

Yeah I've noticed and so I don't take them seriously. The "Miles to Empty" readings don't match either, and on my 2008 EX they seem ridiculously low.

I really don`t use the LCD MPG, It takes forever to update. The center dash console update it every mile I drive... Seems more accurate, but not perfectly accurate.

During my 600 miles trip last weekend, I average 28.1 mpg and this is computer calculated. My everyday driving is 19.8mpg (50/50).

My everyday driving is;

LCD = 24.X mpg (40/60)
Dash = 23.X mpg (usually 0.2 ~ 0.3 lower than LCD)
Calculated = 22.X mpg (usually > 2.0 lower than LCD)

This is awkward... how could the LCD displaying different readings than the dash? Shouldn't it be connected to the same source which makes it own calculation? Why would they use 2 seperate source to calculate the MPG?

According to the manual, "The fuel economy information may differ from the information displayed on the dot matrix liquid crystal display. This is due to the timing difference in updating the information and does not indicate a malfunction."

Sounds dubious, but whatever.

So far my LCD and Center dash are the same when calculating how many more miles to go in my tank. I have a picture on my cell phone if you need a proof. :biggrin:
But, the MPG is different.
The LCD is stuck at 19MPG no matter how bad or conservative I drive, where as the center dash seems a bit on the ball park. It was just a bit strange that when I was driving on the highway this morning it says 30.3 MPG for 10 minutes and went down to 27.6 MPG on the center dash (Not LCD).
Now, was that a glitch ? Seems weird....

Isn't the LCD overall average vehicle mpg while the center dash (especially if reset after refueling) is more an indicator for just that one tank?
LCD=21.8 (80/20)

Maybe their intend was to have one used as an overall indicator and the other as a current indicator. But since you can reset both, guess that defeats that purpose.

Agreed, the only true way is the real world calculation.. miles driven/gallons used. The computer screens are always off in every car I have ever had. Some worse than others.

From my observation, the dash mpg indicator and trip computer tend to be somewhat 'optimistic' with their readouts. I find they usually read 1-2 mpg better than a manual calculation (i.e. reset trip meter and divide trip length by gallons refilled).

Stop and go traffic everyday I average 13.9-15 MPG using 93 octane.

50/50 mix of stop and go city and highway I'm seeing 17.3mpg calculated manually, and the trip computer is showing 19mpg. I was expecting about 20mpg real world. Right now its about the same as our old RX300.

I would like to announce that it is possible with our 08 EXs to get 30 mpgs Hwy. We moved for Corvallis OR to Dallas TX a few weeks ago. The wife drove the EX and I drove the 22' Diesel Penske truck **(side note, if you are moving long distance and cheap like me, go Penske. Fully packed down 22' going 60mph got 10 mpgs which is great for one of those trucks, that was over the passes and the straight flats of NM and West TX)**

But any ways, We got 30mpgs!! We were driving it 60 the whole way but if you can just set the cruise and enjoy the view, it will save you $100 on a long trip like this one. (2150 miles) Again, this was not just the flat and straight roads of West TX, this was also over the passes in OR and ID and through the mountains of Southern UT and CO
