I am looking at buying a 2000 Q45 Anniversary Infiniti. The car seems to be well maintained with only 54,000 miles. I am wondering what I can expect for average MPG City and Highway?

For city, its very iffy what you will get... If your city driving is mostly in-town and short trips (less than 20 miles per startup) dont expect anything above 15... If its like cityish where your moving most the time and drive for a good distance, then expect 17-19, and for highway, expect 20-24.

Has it been an enjoyable 84k?

I just returned home from a 1,500 mile drive. I have already put nearly 17k on my car in 2 months.

It is wonderful. I couldn't love it more. The car has EVERYTHING...class, power, style, toys, comforts.

After nearly 20k of driving, my only qualms:

1) Not even close to enough power at under 3k. A 4.1L motor should pull alot stronger from 0-20.

2) Low quality leather. This doesn't seem to be uncommon with Infinitis. I don't mean "low," it's very nice...but in comparison to a comparable 7 series beamer, it leaves a bit to be desired.

Those are my ONLY complaints. It is a truly fantastic machine, and I could not be happier with it.

The price differential between a top-o-the-line Q and a 745 is huge - You can't compare - of course the ammenities are nicer, but it doesn't justify the price difference.

Other than not having any objections to the leather, I'll echo paranoidjack's sentiments - It's a heck of a car.

So far, my lowest city mileage was 15.8 (lots of rompin'!), and typically averages 17 to 18. Lowest all-highway mileage was 22, with 24 being more typical.

As a point of reference, there are mid-sized V6 sedans (and plenty of minivans) that don't equal the Q's highway mileage - particularly at speeds above 60 MPH. Around town, getting 4,000 pounds moving is bound to require some fuel, but it all evens out whenever you take it on the open road.

I was noticing that the IS350 with its 6 speed automatic and direct injection and dual variable timing camshafts and less weight gets about the same mileage. A little faster in the ¼ mile like a spot on G50, but thats it. Much bigger hole in your pocket.

The FY33 is not very fast from a standing start, but it is so smooth that when you look down at the speedometer, you are shocked you are going 85 mph not that much later.

Isn't it amazing how some will BUY $3,000 more per year in depreciation and $1000 [in extra insurance and interest expense] to save $400 per year in gasoline.

If one has a 3.5-4.0-4.5 liter engine you would have to drop to 2.0-2.2 liter engine and a 2500 pound car to see significant cost savings.

That's exactly it. The Y33 is a heavy car, 0-60 won't be anything impressive. The highway is where this car loves to open up. I don't even need to give it much gas (nor does the car need to downshift) to get from 70mph to 100mph quickly. When you do truly floor it, this car turns into a lot of fun around 40-120mph.

Overall the car is a great choice. By far one of the more underrated cars on the road today.

Having a year previous FY33, and having dropped 22K miles on it already, I have to agree with the sentiments expressed here.

I would expect that the car would have more pull from stop, but then I always consider that my '99 weighs 2 tons - and that is a lot of weight *without* me and all the crap I may have at any given moment. At 159K+ I am still amazed that the car is not even leaking oil noticeably anywhere - and I tend to drive harder than the 'average' Q owner.

I am already looking at buying successive Q models in the FY33 line - I just absolutely love this body style - and as I learn more and more about them have a hope / dream of souping one up with JDM parts and really making it special.

Being my every day driver, I don't get a lot on gas mileage - but, most of the 35 mile trek to work is highway of some sorts, and half is interstate, so I am averaging around 19 mpg all around - I do a lot of city driving when not going to / from work, so it balances out, and if I were to get an accurate reading (meaning no jack rabbit starts, no high speed runs, and no hard down-shift passes) I am reasonably sure I could coax 21-22 out of my sexy, sexy gas-guzzling beast. But where would the fun be in that???
