Since I'll be moving into an apartment in a few weeks, I have to buy a lot of the crap you need to live on your own. Its amazing how quickly this stuff adds up, and I don't even have to buy major furniture(bed, couch, etc). Starting out on your own sucks. Was it the same for all of you guys?

Yep, and I never, ever make real food. Unless I can nuke it or it's just a sammich, to Wendy's/Taco Bell/Chick-fil-A/Arby's I go.

I'm a health freak, so I'll be firing up my foreman to make chicken/burgers/etc......10-15 minutes and u have a healthy/cheap meal. George Foremans are amazing.

It cost me just about 2k to move out. I need first and last month rent and depsot. I had most evey thing I need to move, like silverwear dishes ect. But yea its hard to move out on your own. The price is well worth it though.

Luckily I only pay $300/month for everything except internet/cable. And I don't need first and last months rent.....so I'm lucky there.

Holy jeebus, that is lucky. And my last roommate had a George Forman grill, those things are indeed awesome.

I second the Foreman grill! It makes up for many culinary deficiencies.

I picked up furniture at thrift stores for practically nothing. Acquired a lot of used stuff from my parents.

But overall, I think living on your own is lame unless you plan on getting married soon. So I returned home. There was absolutely no practical reason for me to be on my own.

Amen to the Forman Grill....it's a household favorite. I moved out when I was 25 basically well my parents moved to a farm. It was rough at first but now I have a house, we remodeled the whole thing and now have a lot of cars to fill up the driveway...woohoo

Moved out for 2 years, moved back in. My parents were really cool about it, even got my old room back. No rent to pay, no utilties, come back from work and there's food on the table, food in the fridge. I'd put up with some rules for those luxuries. I also saved enough cash to start my own business.

I've been home for winter break for a week and I'm broed out of my mind. I couldn't imagine living at home again unless I was really out of money. It's nice having the freedom to invite whoever you want into your place to do whatever you want or to come and go at any hour. I just love the freedom. It's definately not cheap, but it is worth every penny.

Jeez. I'm going to have to get a George Foreman grill. Haven't seen this much vehement product support since V1. What was this thread supposed to be about?

WorstRappingEver!

No wait, there's P Diddy.

I saw a Foreman Grill just now at Wal-Mart for 13 bucks! I paid fifty-five bucks back in the day, and now they have timers.

Moving out was a *****!

There are so many little things you have to get but dont think about, especially if you like to cook alot (like me). I found myself going out to get something I forgot for months.

I spent alot of money because I had nothing at all besides furniture. Just go to Bed Bath and Beyond (they actaully have decent prices on alot stuff), Walmart, wherever, and take your time, look at everything, and get what you need. Bring alot of money or a credit card.

And then filling up the fridge and cupboards for the first time.

Looks like I should get one of those Foreman grills too. My brother really likes the Showtime Rotisserie (only get if you don't pay for utilities).

First of all, don't get cable or broadband internet until you are completely settled in.

Second, you don't need furniture. Personally, I would take a nice soft, thich matted rug over a bed. Heck, I'd sleep on the floor is I had/wanted to. Also, it's good for back to sleep on hard surface.

For food, shop at bargain places. You know those name brand Oreos? You can get the same thing in the Walmart brand for 50%. Also, if you have a BigLots near you, they have really cheap prices on everything. You can get a packet of Ramon Noodles for 11.3 cents a piece!

Luckily the apartment I'm moving into is furnished(bed, couch, dressors, fridge, stove, microwave, etc). I just need to bring tv, stereo, sheets, towels, pots, pans, etc. I'm not looking forward to going food shopping for the first time....it's gonna be an ouchy, but I'm getting a Sam's membership so that should help on some things.

And why shouldn't you get internet/cable until you are completely settled in?

Then I had a small Foreman, but I asked for one of the big bad boys for Christmas. Luckily Christmas is about the same time as me moving on my own, so I can ask for some of things I need for Christmas.

Ah the early 20's!!

I moved out when I was 20 with my girlfriend at the time. BIIIIiiiiiiiiG mistake!

Neither one of us was ready to play that role.

Anyway, from 21 (when she and I broke up) until 25 I lived with 4 other guys in the sweetest house any group of single guys have EVER lived in! Big arse in ground pool, bar, pool table, 5 bedrooms, huge kitchen, 2 bathrooms, full gym, AND a dance/party/rave room in the basement. We had the life!!!

Then I grew up, had a kid, went back to school and started getting more into the things in life that advance my future position as opposed to just living for fun, girls, and intoxication.

Lesson:

Have a crap load of fun, get it ALL out of your system, and be safe. I know I needed to exercise some demons back then... and I'm much better off for it today.

Oh, and moving sucks. But, that first place that you can really call "yours" is freaking awesome!

Because that's usually an extra $50~$150 a month from your income. And when you first move out, ever dollar counts.

i cant see cable/internet being 150 bux. Probably about 50 with both together. Since his rent is fairly cheap, its a godo thing to have. How else could you surf nico on those lonely nights?

$150 was on the high end. If you had business Edition Road Runner and Cable/Satelite would cost about $120~150 a month.
Altiman94 wrote:Since his rent is fairly cheap, its a good thing to have.
I don't know, I'm just saying, it is not neccessary. I mean, if you have the money, get it. But if you are still buying stuff to "stock" your apartment with, I would do that first, and then get cable/internet.

I dropped about $3000 when I moved out a couple weeks ago. And I have a roommate who bought some stuff. I don't even know where it all went. I just had it... then I didn't

So worth it though. especially since my stepmom and I hated each other.

Definitely was like that for me.

My parents helped out a LOT, though. They bought me a new bed and mattress set, a couch (garage sale, but still a couch--it even reclines) and my mother almost always has a stack of food for me when I go to visit. They also gave me some chairs and utensils and other furniture. In fact...ALL my furniture came from them. That ended up saving me a lot of cash. I also moved in during a time when my apartment complex had a free move in deal going, so no move-in costs or deposit or any of that. I moved halfway through a month, so I also didn't have to pay rent until the next month. I got two weeks free. My utilities are included in rent, save for phone and internet. So my monthly bills are only 400 for my half. Quite nice.

But I think I went through about $1500 in the first week. The first month ran me about $2000 I bet, buying all the new stuff I needed, (meaning only $500 more added to the initial $1500). Lucky for me I moved out about a month before my birthday, so I got a lot of the little things I needed then.

And rousie13, I hear ya on the Foreman grill. The savior of lazy *** cheapskates like me.

[Hank Hill voice] Nothing compares to the smell and taste of food cooked on a clean burning, efficient propane grill[/hank hill voice]

Dam I love that show

Hey, for a matress, I have found that Linens-and-things, or some other craft type store has rolls of like 8in thick foam that you can buy for about $25. They are actually quite nice to sleep on .

I had the same problem guys. I had $10 in single dollar bills, but then this stupid woman that was half naked walked up to me. When she left, I didn't have anymore money left . [redneck]Dam my cousin looked hot in that strip joint[/redneck]

Gosh, I can't imagine being an adult and living at home with mom. Sorry, I don't know how you guys do it. Once I left for college that was it. My parents home (where I grew up was for visits only when I left for college). My siblings were the same way. I had wondeful parents, who were willing to help if necessary but we were raised to make it on our own.

IMHO setting up a first apartment on a shoe string budget, that can be way fun. Besides hand-me-downs, and discount stores, I also went to estate sales/auctions, garage sales, flea markets. It was a lot of fun and you'd be amazed what you can get so cheaply.

I've had my own place for over 8 years. I lived 3 states away from home the entire time. I worked my *** off, had my own house, had a whole lot of fun.... THEN I GREW UP!!!

I moved back in with the family when I was 27 years old! Both my brother and I never got a handouts... but I love my family and I have NO regrets moving back in for a while. It's simply a matter of economic convenience. I go to school close to home now and it was easier to move in here than get another house for the two years I planned on being here.

My Brother just moved back in as well. He's 31 years old and a former USAF pilot. There is nothing wrong with moving back in with the folks.

Besides that.. I am here to HELP my FAMILY out. Mom has never been happeir having both her sons back home. We do all the work that Dad is shouldn't have to worry about. Mom gets a break from cooking once in a while, and she loves to cook for us anyway.

When done with school I'll be in the market for another house... but until then, I couldn't be happier with how things are!
