The Versa is a perfect commuter car in cities like the Big Apple, and I smile at the gas station folks everytime I refill the tank and driving alongside those hybrid like Toyota Prius costing thousands more.
The V has passed its break-in period and now averaging around 24 MPG in mixed city/hwy commuting mode vs. 19 MPG with my 2004 Honda CRV EX in AWD, air conditioning on - best highway 35 MPG vs. 28 for the CRV. It's easy to park, virtually any parking space will fit (hatchback is 12" shorter than the CRV) and I can squeeze thru almost all doubled parked cars on side streets. In dollar terms, I'm spending about $35 a week in gas vs. $55 to $60 a week as I put in 350+ miles a week commuting and weekend.
I was seriously looking at the Honda Civic LX with its $19,000+ OTD price tag similiarly equipped, the only item that I've wished for with the S trim is the cruise control. The lower APR that I got in financing plus total cash costs is paying for my insurance on the Nissan as a 2nd (but driven as a primary vehicle) car for the next 5 years. It's a truely win-win situation, and if gas price head toward the $3.50 or $4.00 mark, we as Versa owners will be laughing all the way to and from the bank.
In short, Versa it !!!!
P.S. Mass transit isn't an option for me as it would be a 4 hour daily commute between work & home whereas driving trim it down to 1.5 or 2 hours at most, and I'm a First Responder on call 24/7 with loaded gears. And, yes, I have a 26" bike that I ride around too - when appropriate.
