Hey guys/gals,
Yesterday, I was pretty close to the Santa Cruz Mountains in CA, so I decided to drive on over there and test out my completely stock NA Z for a bit (I haven't had it for very long). It was a lot of fun just going up and down certain sections, and I think I learned a bit more about the car's capabilities and limitations. I got a good feel for how the car handles, but I didn't really test it out until I engaged an E36 M3 going downhill and got schooled by a 911. I was able to keep up with the M3 no problem except for the very slow super tight turns, I was schooled on those.
After going downhill again I saw a Porsche 911 in my rear-view mirror, and he was definitely way faster than me, so I pulled over and let him pass. I followed him for a bit, and I was just in awe as I watched him blaze through the corners and at times, swing that back end with massively wide tires around them. Needless to say I was eating his dust, but it was pretty cool to watch.
So my conclusion of the car is the following: it understeers a bit, the brakes aren't too good, the car is pretty heavy (which might have contributed to the brakes not being too good), and there's a lot of body roll.
The car is definitely a lot of fun, and I'm sure it would be a lot more fun if it wasn't stock. So the main question is how would you guys tune your cars for mountain pass or "touge" runs? It could be anything from suspension set up, brakes, wheels, tires, downforce, etc.
