So I dropped my motor off at the machine shop yesterday. While I was there, he did some quick checking of some stuff while I was there. He put the head on a vacuum machine and tested how well the valves sealed. Two of the cylinders he said were as perfect you can get and the other two were more than acceptable but thinks it just might be a little carbon buildup on the seats. The head has a couple low spots on it so it needs to be resurfaced. Here is the breakdown of what's going on...

Block cleaningBlock honingNew piston ringsCrank is being groundNew oversized main bearingsNew oversized rod bearingsHead is being resurfacedValve seats are being cleaned while the head is disassembledValve and timing covers are getting powdercoatedPistons are being bead blasted to remove the carbon buildupRotating assembly being reassembled

So I am already looking forward to getting it back so I can start getting all the little misc crap to go on. He said for an extra $150 I could o-ring the block and not worry about a factor head gasket blowing out, but in the end we both decided that was super double mega overkill since I have no intentions of running really high boost levels. Plus, it's cheaper to replace a headgasket than it would be fixing the block the rod went through

piston rings - $53main bearings - $28rod bearings - $18crank grinding and polishing - $50head resurfacing - $50

Cleaning of the block, honing of the cylinders, disassembly of the head/cleaning of the valves/seats, powdercoating of the valve covers and timing covers, and reassembly of the rotating assembly - $200

So around $400 total give or take.

Yeah, he is giving me a good deal. He is selling me the parts at his wholesale cost. Also, the cleaning, honing, and powdercoating are freebies.

don't mean to come off soundin like a prick but i hope this guy knows exactly what he's doing. i'm just saying this because i've had a few friends that have had machine work done for pretty cheap and have had things f'd up pretty bad. mostly head related work.

Umm...he does it for a living. He has a badass built VG30ET. If he can build that, he can take care of the simple CA. And the machine he uses to resurface the head exceeds the quality needed for MLS type gaskets such as the cometic. I think the motor is in more than capable hands

I don't think there were any hard feelings. I was real suprised when he told me how much he was paying for all of that too. But hey, if it comes out as well as it sounds, then hell yea! It seems he's got some hellatious luck for some reason anyway.

Thats a killer price if I could get it here in Germany. The Euro to Dollar exchange is terrible...
