My car is a 93 S13 with about 78k miles... I'm guessing I need new mounts of some sort but I'm not sure. Here is my problem... when I step on the gas, let go, and step on it again, the car will kinda feel like something is bucking. Or it will kind of jolt. So basically, if I pump the gas pedal, it would "buck" multiple times. I kinda feel it come from under the car. I don't know if its the transmission or if its the rear, or what.

In case you are wondering why I would pump the gas pedal anyways its because its just something Ive done when I used to drive an automatic FF car and I want to balance the car while taking a corner fast... Or is this something that is supposed to happen with FR cars in manual trans? This is my first FR/5spd car.

If it makes a clunking noise, most likely its your subrame bushings.

Have its clunking when you send torque through the system it could be a couple of things, none of which I've ever checked on an s13.

transmission mount, if its going the transmission could be clunking from being torqued.

Maybe something with the rear as well, driveshaft u-joint or even wheel bearings in the rear.

If it feels like its coming from under you, check the transmission mount. (if this is not possible for those reading please correct me)

I for some reason doubt its your subframe bushings with those miles on the car...still possible though.

Edit: going by what someone is calling a clunk is very hard to diagnose, because we all have at times different 'classses' of clunks ;)

check the driveshaft bushing, it's at the middle of the drive shaft where the 2 shafts connect.

So what exactly will I be looking for? I just got off work.. not much daylight out where I'm at. I'll have to jack it up and look tomorrow if I have time.

For the record, I have had the dealer replace the clutch and the rear main seal.. so if it was something under the car, they would of caught it I'm sure.. after all they were the ones that suggested I replace those things anyways when all I wanted them to do was flush and fill the rear diffy fluid.

Where is the transmission mount located? I'm new.. so hope that's not too dumb of a question... so basically am I looking for bushings that have cracks or goo coming out of them?

One final thought... I guess maybe this would better describe the "clunking"... go out and drive the car.. then do a couple of clutch kicks... the upsetting of the drivetrain is the same feeling I get when I'm torquing and feeling it clunk. The torquing is a little more noticeable though.. I might drive the car tonight to see if I can further redefine the sound in case anyone has ideas... since I can't actually look at it until tomorrow and want to get as much direction as possible without having to take it to the dealer to diagnose.

I have the same problem with my 1990 240SX (SOHC). Whenever I transition from on the gas to off the gas, or the reverse, the entire car lurches back and forth as if something is loose in the driveline. It doesn't seem to matter how hard I accelerate. It is most noticeable in first and second gear. I have replaced the transmission mount and the subframe bushings and checked the motor mounts, which appear to be fine, as well as replaced the entire driveshaft with a custom built single unit that utilizes three u-joints instead of the usual two piece shaft that is connected with a rubber coupling. It seems to happen only when the clutch is engaged, which makes me think it may be something in the differential or the gearbox... too much play in the gears? I am also considering a problem with the fuel injection or ignition system when transitioning to/from coasting. Short of replacing costly driveline components, I’m out of ideas.

My car was doing mostly the same thing. It would vibrate like hell when braking from higher speeds. Turned out to be the transmission mount. That's what sounds like the problem is here, too.
