I just baught an 89 240 fastback...the guy who owned it before me went in and replaced the neoprene timing chain guides and drained all the oil and cleaned out the oil pan wit kerosene and stuff like that...as soon as you start the motor , idle all the way up to redline there is a slight ticking in the motor...its not a really knock or clank ut just a slight tick like you were to take a playin card and flick it with you thumbnail...but loudder...sound like its in front of engine in the top case where the valvetrain is...wondering what you guys think>? going to try Mobil 1 5w30 oil and see if it stops..the guys said it just needs to be ran and it will stop cus he said it resets itself or something...you guys are the experts..lemme kno whatcha think

thanks

you need to remove the top and lower chain guards. what engine do you have? zer...d.htm

check that out i think it will be of help. i bought my 92' vert with the same noise, and nissan recommends that the upper and lower guards not be replaced, but removed completely. also you need to make sure your tensioner is working properly. its all explained in that link. good luck.

Just in the mean time, are you sure the oil is at the right level? I remember hearing a similar sound that went away went I added oil cause it was a bit low.

this is true for the KA24DE engines of 1991+ vintages... so Garret, don't bother w/ this one...

Quote »might be a sticking valve its common on old engines or might need a valve adjustment[/quote]also, this is true for the later engines as stated... our SOHC KA24E engines came w/ hydraulic valves, not the fixed/shimmed valves. but they can "stick" as well d/t clogged dirty oil up thurr

check oil level as stated or change to syn to mebbe help clean out those oil passegeways, mebbe try seafoam, there's also a check on the hydraulic valve s floating around via FSM specs...

there are no "guards" on the SOHC engines... Y i said fugghetaboutit

did he changed out the timing chain, tensioner, guides (improved design wif plastic covered on metal backs/spines), and mebbe newer cam/cranck sprockets... @ least those were the things i've replaced on mines...

as for LUCAS oil stabilizers-- stay away from this stuff! just use that high quality oil... search archives about this or google "bob is the oil guy"
