( 91 240sx) Well ive been battleing an over heating problem.I put a new raditor and water pump and thermostat. And i was also haveing problems with the ideling so i removed the hole throttle body and cleaned it and that valve that controles the idle. So tonight after i put the new thermostat i was letting it idle for 15 too 20 min.I was sitting in my chair next to the heater haveing a soda and cleaning my tools and the idleing drop almost to where it wouldnt run.So i run the rpm to 4g and it was working good again.sit back down and noticed the garage was filling with smoke. The smoke was so thick i had to wipe my glasses.Man i tell you this sucks just bought my wife a new.that meens for me no more kid smell in my car trash and ECT.I was almost a foot ahead and now iam 8 foot back it always happens to me.Never fails.Well i think it might be a bad pistion ring dont know really any info would be helpful. Think i might run a hose from my tail pipe to the neighbors window lol like che and chong did. Well on the bright side i may beable to get a turbo lol iam dreaming would be nice tho

Number of issues...

a. NEVER go past 3k until the motor is fully warmb. the rings have yet to fully seal and the bearings could still be "dry" c. bad valve seals - happens alot on older 240s.

If it smokes all the time then its most likely the rings, run a compression check. If one reads low then drop some oil into the cylinder and recheck it. If it just smokes at start up then my bet is on the valve seals.

Pull your plugs... sounds like one has become fouled by oil. Causing no spark and no power in that cylinder. This would make it idle really rough.

Is it still overheating? My first thought was cylinder head gasket, but your overheating and smoking might just be unrelated.

what color is the smoke? whats it smell like? if you're having a heating problem as well, maybe you're burning coolant? it doesnt have to be just oil...

EDIT:

Also something similar to this happened on my boat engine last summer. It smoked a LOT for a while, and then it was hard to start and it would only run for a little while before it died... turned out one of the pistons was completely shattered.. doesnt mean one of yours is, but it could definetly mean one of your cyls isnt firing for some reason. check the plugs and do a compression test as well. also look for bubbles in your radiator for a headgasket leak

The head gasket is blown. White smoke and kind of sweet smelling=head gasket. Blue=oil. Black=mixture. These are of course generalities. But of course horsepower, you have a bad head gasket.

Well i called around today and the shops want 800 too 1100 cash for the install of the new head gasket.i dont have that kind of cash times are tough. What could i expect if i done the rebuild my self i meen do i haft to have the head shaved or new valves, or just the head gasket. i seen a stock rebuild kit for $398.00 pistions rings and gaskets ECT.just wanted to know in depth what i was looking at. ive never done a rebuild on a motor but i can figue things out as i go i learn fast. Any pointers on the timeing so i dont have a a mess of problems at the end.any information is good info. ill have to buy a schlitins book on my car prb and that should give me all the torqur numbers. and should i have the block cleaned at a shop or is there a product that i can get to do it my self at a local parts store. On the stock valves do i haft to have a special tool to set the valve springs back. and on the cams i dont think the rebuild kit came with new cam shims. Is that a must to replace. Sry for all the questions i just dont want to jump into it totaly blind folks. May the force be with me.................
