Since I'm here and looking, I though this would be a good place for opinions on a recommended engine for a THEORETICAL transplant.

I have a '67.5 RL411 wagon. (well, more than that - check my profile - but subject of this question for now)...

I'm toying with the EVENTUAL idea of swapping a FRONT-ENGINE/FRONT-DRIVE drivetrain into the REAR of the wagon (making it a mid-engined car, sort of).

I'd like about 176 h.p. in stock or close-to-stock form. Could be a 4 cyl., but thinking V-6.

Any recommendations? It would probably be a complete front suspension/drive-train swap.

(and don't tell me it can't be done!!)

TIA,Carl

You could do an SR20DET, but the transmissions for the SR20s that were front drive have their share of issues, so that may not be the best idea, stealing the V6 out of a Maxima would definitely be a possibility seeing as how you're obviously unafraid of either expense or fabricating one-of a kind items for your car, and why don't you have an original Fairlady or any Zs?

Hmm, that is going to be an interesting hybrid, and for sure, a one of a kind. I'm going to go ahead and recommend something that will probably be considered blasphemy.... I'm thinking a 3S-GTE from an MR2 might not be a bad swap. I don't know much about the engine or transmission or whether they have any inherent problems, but that engine is meant to be mid mounted. Anyway, that's my two cents, I think it would be the best idea if you didn't mind the Toyota -> Nissan (Datsun) crossover.

A MR2 hybrid huh?? Not a bad idea. Would rather stick to Nissan for label purposes, but an already mid-engine makes sense.

But that IS why I wanted a fwd system anyway.... that's where the Fiat X1/9 drive came from... a 128 fwd with the steering links fixed (basically).

My fantasy theory is to take: Lucille and restore her concours-fashion; Suzie for the modified, rear/mid-engined, slammed and tricked out monster (ala the 510 guys with a vengeance); and Grace to become either a convertible/race car/who-knows-what. You see, Grace has terminal rust at the rear roof-line from too many years sitting outside in San Francisco. It's a shame because she's otherwise in such GREAT condition.

All fantasy though of course (at least I can retire successfully and find me a sugar-mamma :boink

Oh... why no roadsters or Z's??? I was once enamored of a first-year Z... The day I walked around a corner in Sydney, Australia while on R&R and saw my first Z, first year out for them... silver, quite stunning having never seen anything like it before and having not been back in the states for about 18 months (nor anywhere near civilization). But, Nah, too mundane for me, I like the oddities... besides my experience with my first 411 in '68-'71 was enough to keep me focused on the RL411. Maybe when my shortlist of a dream garage is filled (and each of their trunks is filled with money!!:rolleyes
