Hello to all.I have a 1990 Nissan 240 SX. One day back in December, when I tried to start my car, it turned on for about 10 seconds then it died down. It didn't want to start again. I sensed a smell like something was burning.I took it to a mechanic, who replaced the starter, the computer (the reason for the burning smell...), and the timing chain. However, now the motor is overheating. The mechanic explained that the overheating is not from the cooling system, but that something, a sensor or a wire is telling the computer to send more gas than it should. So, by the manifold part of the motor, by the spark plugs, it's overheating. Mechanic doesn't know what it is. He doesn't recommend driving the car not even two blocks away fearing it might go into flames....We took it to the dealer and they recommended replacing the whole wiring harness of the car, mentioning that if a sensor or wire is making the computer send more gas than it should is better to replace the whole wiring harness. Another mechanic mentioned that it could be a timing problem, that timing hasn't been synchronized correctly.

But, if the mechanic replaced the timing chain, he should have had to time it correctly, right? Could it be a sensor, faulty wire? Maybe computer is not the one the car needs?

Can someone help me, please?

three sensors can cause an ecu to over compensate for different conditions. the coolant temp sensor and the mafs and the throttle position sensor. the o2 will make for a richer mix when not working properly, but not enough to cause something like that. What caused the mechanic to say it's something else though? I think the dealer is trying to take you guys for a ride.

If the timing were an issue, you'd know pretty quick if it were. In the time from the chain job to now, did you ever overheat or get past that middle mark?

same thing on mine but i figured it out. if there is any air in the coolant system it wont circulate right. bleed the coolant system and try it oput. it worked for me.

Yeah, I had some overheating issues with mine. As it turns out I was not thorough when I bled the system and it was still half empty.

Here's a thought. On my SRT they put a brake caliper bleed screw in the coolant bleed opening. This lets me hook up one of those small hand vacuum pumps to suck the air out of the system and close it with a wrench when I get solid coolant with no bubbles. I think I'm going to try this on the Nissan next time.
