ok i've been havin this problem for the past 3 weeks on my '91 240. it started where the motor would randomly cut out or stall when im driving. at light throttle it would sound like misfire, but at WOT it would be fine...until it hit 2500rpm. whenever the car acts up(which is at some point every day), it wont let me rev past that.once i hit 2500, it would misfire and buck violently, and at idle it will bounce at 2500 too. even if i downshift and give it gas when it above 2500, nothing happens. i took it to a dealership and at first they said dirty connectors , as soon as i pulled it away it still did it . so i replaced the distributor, wires, plugs, cap, rotor, fuel filter, the whole 9 yards. when i replaced the distributor, i think i messed w/ the timing, but it still cuts out and im stumped!! help, thanks Sean

PS-after i installed the dizzy, it had no power, so i moved it all the way to the left, and it got most of its power back, but now the idle surges between 250-750, and it will die if i dont keep an eye on it.

have you checked your mafs(mas air flow sensor). its right after the air intake box. thats the usual problem for the symptoms you described. and you shouldn't be driving that car around w/ symptoms like that. good luck welcome to the forum and use the search.

yes, ive cleaned it w/ brake cleaner and the dealership cleaned the connections. i dont wanna drive the car around either actin like this, but im a student, so this is my daily driver for school and work, so i have no choice . when i turn my key ON, my CEL and ABS light are on, but as soon as i start it, they go away, so im assumin im not throwin any codes??

the reason your car won't run past 2.5k is cuz i cannot sense something. so it has to be throwing a cel. bring it to autozone and they can diagnose it for free.

i checked the CEL myself, and it came up as code 12-mass air flow sensor. now when i took it to the dealership, they cleaned up the connections to the maf. so im assuming its the actual thing itself? off to the junkyard i go......

so if i am throwin a CEL, then why would it turn off as soon as i start the engine? i always assumed that meant i wasnt throwin a code......o well, u learn from ur mistakes

i had the same problem. the light turns off it runs a self diagnostic test and then runs fine, it usually stays on if its something like the catalytic converter or an injector or something like that..

turned out ot be my MAF, it was intermittanly puttin out low voltage to the ecu, causin it to rev to 2.5k. plus my battery has a bad cell in it, so that also helped out too. my buddy has a MAF to a '92 or 95 sentra, 1.6L i believe, that i can get for free. would this work on my DOHC, and would this give any restrictions at all cuz its a smaller motor?

Get the correct maf. It will cost you like $30?

Getting a MAF from another car will throw everything off because the maf signal has a different curve (i.e. when ppl go to 300zx maf, they have to completely retune their car).
