1989 Nissan 240sx (220,000 miles)

the radiator hose had came off while i was driving, stopped the car towed it home.

We got the car to the house and started it after putting water back in it and it sounds like someone is hitting the head with a hammer.

I talked to a guy at a local salvedge yard, and he said that i blew a head gasket because of the white smoke (water) and because when i start it water shoots out of the radiator. He also said that i might have warped the head. He said if the cylinder wall isnt notched then its probably fixable.

The other guy (stated he has worked on z cars his whole life) said that the motor was toast and said that i might as well save for a swap.

Any body know whats up?

thanks.

yeah sounds like its donezo. How much do you love your car? you can probably get a new (used) motor for less then it would be to have it repaired. fairly easy swap.

i salute the fallen soilder

You dont really know if your motors blown until you tear it apart, the problem you have now just sounds like a blown HG. If your technically savvy enough you could download an FSM and replace it yourself, but you need tools and a shop to do it. Also with the millage on your motor its not a bad idea just to swap it out anyway.

You could buy a replacement SOHC or even upgrade to a dohc online, the classified here have a few of them right now. You might have to wait a bit to find one near you, or get it shipped for about 200 bucks or so.

the hammer sound...you positive about this? Usually not a good sign...

But like 480sx said, look around. you should be able to find dohc's and sohc's for very reasonable prices. enough to give you some time to figure out what goals you're gonna be shooting for.

if i were in your shoes ( which i kinda was when my friend go his first 240sx and the motor blew on the way home from picking it up) i would swap it out.. if you are fairly mechanically inclined it is an easy swap. me and a friend did it with no Nissan or much experience at all and it worked as long as you have the right tools and have a good memory of hooking everything back up to were it goes. that way you become one with your car too. you really learn a lot about 240s once you do this.
