I find it utter that anyone attempts to "predict reliability" for an auto that is a new model that has been out for less than one year (closer to only half a year) and is in short supply. That goes for both the omitted Nissan Versa as well as the listed Honda Fit.

I agree with you 100%. What standards do you use to predict reliability for a car that you don't have any real information on reliability. Predicted reliability is just a good as our opinions on reliability. People who are concerned about reliability shouldn't buy new cars. You won't have any genuine numbers for the model year until the year after.

: to Predicted Reliability in general

Agreed. Reliability is based on past performance. These cars (including the Versa) have no past performance. The only way they could make any kind of reliablility statement is if they looked at the Jazz (I think that's what the non north american Fit is called) and the Tiida. But even that isnt accurate since there have been changes to those cars in coming to NA. Smacks of Honda Marketing to me.

Except that everyone is forgeting that this car is the Tiida in other countries. so the reliability is already there.

Notice that not all cars are listed. You could be on neither on the most reliable OR the least reliable. The previous generation Sentra and rated poorly. The Honda Fit has been out for longer than the Versa and it's drivetrain is very similar ot hte same unit that was offered on early 90's civics.... so it's reasonable to assume that it be camparable to other Hondas.

The data is based on Consumers Reports readers surveys. It's possible that Toyota and Honda owners lie... but I'd actually epect the opposite. As a whole I think the data is fairly accurate. Nissan has never been near the top of any of the quality surveys. Their overall quality and reliability is only slightly above average.

Also, it would surprise me if the authors of this report (which I suspect is narrowly aimed at only the U.S. or North American market) bothered to consider the foreign contingent of the Nissan Tiida, Honda Jazz, or the various Toyota, Scion, etc. equivalent models when compiling their data.

As stated by marleyfan, we wouldn't be able to use the track record of foreign vehicles because changes have been made that can affect reliability. TPMS sensors are a really good example. This isn't the first time CR has done something like this. Back in 2005, they rated the Corvette C6 and the new mustang as one of the worst in reliability. For those who don't know, these 2 cars were totally redesigned for 2006. I think they had good reason to rate the mustang as they did. The versions before were plagued with problems, as with every Ford. But I didn't understand the C6's rating. The C5 had some problems every now and again, but it was a pretty reliable car, nothing like the Mustangs. Most C6 owners will disagree with it's reliability rating it received the year before the model year.

Nissan North America does not have a good track record on reliability. Its two US manufacturing facilities are particularly lousy at buidling dependable cars, and this fact is well-recognized by the Nissan home office in Japan and by Carlos Ghosn. Some months ago it was reported in Japan that Mr. Ghosn had been very unhappy about the performance of the Tennessee operation, esp. about relability. So it's not all CR rating, folks. Nissan is fully aware that its North American QA standards are not up to Toyota's and Honda's.

Nissan in Japan, on the other hand, builds quality products. Reliability has not been an issue over there, including that of the Tiida.

The Versa is built in Mexico at its Aguascalientes facility. They have a lousy track record of buidling unreliable Sentras for years. How they are doing with the Versa remains to be seen. I have no reliable information on that.
