If you're staying away from forced induction, and don't want to spend too much under the hood, you can keep all the internals stock, leave the fuel pump stock, and add a 50hp shot of nitrous oxide. That will be a simple way to give you an extra 50 hp and it'll cost you about $1000 for the best set up around. You will have to change out your spark plugs and run them a step colder. You can change out the fuel pump and go two steps colder on the plugs, and run a 75-100hp shot.

Oh, and done correctly, nitrous is very safe for the engine. The key is doing it correctly.
