Just for kicks and giggles, how would one go about a really fuel efficient 240sx that maintained at least stock power, hopefully more. What kind of gas mileage would a raised compression KA24DE with a port and polish and bolt ons get? The power would be respectable, but would the mileage be hurt, improved, or would it stay the same?

My old sohc only gets 200-225 a tank and gas is costing so much these days that i'm curious.

*edit* Consider any practical engine swap, internal work, ect that could be done with 5 grand or less.

I got about 450 miles on a tank once on my turbo KA. It was all highway miles and I drafted trucks for increased mileage. I had five bucks in my pocket and was over 200 miles from home with about 1/3 tank of gas. I stretched it as best I could and ended up putting just under 15 gallons in the tank.

I say remove your exhaust completely, do lots and lots of wieght reduction, lots and lots of spark advance, lots of spark efficiency work, destroke the ka, run super high compression, more wieght reduction, remove all accessory pulleys, get lightened flywheel and a stiff clutch, lighten all rotating mass, maybe get bigger wheels and tires for higher gearing. Other stuff too that i'm forgetting. Maybe make the cams less aggressive.. and other stuff..

Ah.. I thought we were only speaking hypothetically here. :)

I also think you could run with an open filter, and a good race P&P of the manifold/head, and some more headwork with race-prepped valves. This should effectively lower the VE in the lower rpms, and give you good gas mileage for daily driving. :) ..lowend torque would be a problem though.. but it's all hypothetical, right?

Put a throttle stop on at about 50% throttle. That should increase your fuel economy.

it also depend on your driving habits.

don't reve high and when you go down hills put the car in neutral gear. or when you're on the high way where you could just roll neutrally in a constant speed. smooth road = less friction= more rolling distance

or buy a civic and park the 240:D

gas mileage hurts when you get 20 to the gallon and have to run 93oct:(

I too am ready for a motorcycle or a cheap beater that can get 30 plus on 87...

I used to get around 26, but now I get more like 22 or worse. Working on catching up on some of the basic maintnance stuff that should improve it though.

I regularly get about 25-27 city 28-30 hwy, and I have over 166xxx miles logged on the odometer in my 5spd '93 hatch. I run 93 octane and I've done nothing more than a K&N filter and properly inflated 215 45r17 tires. :ylsuper oh, and I clean my windsheild with every new tank of gas. :)
