I have had my '94 Q45 for a couple of months now and absolutely love it. I am convinced that the '90 to '96 models are the best cars for the money out there but it is obvious that it is hard to find a clean one.

I will be in the market for another car in a year or two.

Which of the later models, '97 to '02, are the most desirable and why?

2002--Roomy, lots of gadgets and gobs of power. That's my opinion, but I've never driven any from those years. The '02 isn't selling well, of course, but the economy might have a lot to do with that.

It is going to depend on your budget. If you have 40 or so to spend, the 2002 is cool. I love the interior, the cars got power. but if you are looking for something cheaper, try out a 97-01. There was an anniversary edition in 2000, I wonder how that is doing resale value wise? In any case I love my 97' Touring. If you go for a 97-01 try to get an anniversary of Touring, the T package is really needed on the 2nd gen to get a reasonable handling car.

I sure would like to get Q45 tech's opinion on this subject since he works at a dealership and has hands on experience with all of these models.

Anyone who has knowledge of these models, please give your views and opinions.

Thanks,Jerry

Thanks,

I am just looking for input from those who have experience with these models.

The only Q45 I have ever driven is the one I own:)

I would have to say if price is no object, the 2002 Q45 is a no-brainer.

If you are not Bill Gates, you pays your money and takes your choices. Personally, I think Gen 2 and Gen 3 are still overpriced, but remember, I am someone who overpaid for my low mileage Gen 1s.

It's all in the eye of the beholder.

I doubt he's had much experience working on Gen 2 since they are pretty much bullet proof. I have 69k and like nothing has gone wrong. I have a 92' now also, and it is faster, but the smoothness that my 97' has cannot be matched.

In any case, I agree, I would buy a 2002 if I was going to pay in the 35-40k area. If you want something in the 15-20k see if you can score an 2000 aniversary. The 97 and 98's are getting really cheap, see if you can hold out for a touring model.

We have around 20 97-00 Q customers some with 150k miles most getting near 100k.Besides alternators, ac work, knock sensors and harnesses, usual brake work, shocks, front tension rods, window regulators nothing seems to have changed much from the 94-96 other than no plenum hoses yet!Q were all essentially bullet proof even the 90 until around 75k or 6 years. I spent nothing till around 85k [even the aftermarket repair policy spent nothing till 6 years and then it was a broken sunvisor.

The cliff is somewhere it will show up.

Just because nothing has gone wrong doesn't mean the plenum is not dirty! or the transmission is perfect

A '98-'01 Lexus LS400 (more power, 5 speed trans, better handling, etc.).

but at a cost, at least 10-15k more...is it worth it? i didn't think so when I did it, I do agree the LS is a great car, but there are so many of them on the road. My brothers 96 is so boring looking IMHO compared to my 97 Q. I've driven it, I think there isn't that big of a difference.

The LS does look boring in most colors, esp. the half-earthy, half-metallic colors you see on so many of them. I usually hate white cars but think it does look pretty good in white for some reason (with moderately tinted windows).

I've driven a '98 LS before and it felt HUGE compared to the Q. But didn't drive it hard enough to realize if the engine or handling was up to snuff.

The winner is the 99 Q.....

WHAT! WHY???

Well, its like this, the 97 & 98 didn't have the signiture clock.the xenon headlights, glass roof, and a few other touches like the side airbags (mid-year change).

but the reason it wins is the VALUE.

Currently they are coming off lease, many low mile clean 99s are on sale for $19,999 to 23,000 and more. The cars are as new.Yet they sell for less than one half the original price. Thats why they win.:ylsuper

The LS 400 is a very nice car, Ive owned one the last two years and 30,000 miles. The car is slightly, very slightly more refined. That refinement isnt worth the 10-15k premium. The Q has better seats, streering, stereo, power, insurance rates, and those heated seats really work better than those on the Lexus.I voted with my bucks in this election...the 99Q wins!

I prefer the 2K Anniversary Edition Touring model....

Probably will be my next car (unless an M45 falls out of the sky at less than half it's MSRP).

As they come off lease and the price settles in (depreciation slows) I would agree, it will be THE Q, when that moment comes.

Probably summer of '03, depending on when the lease was started. Lease cos are a great source of excellent high end cars at half price or less.
