Wow. That's what was causing all the problems?

Yeah I also had all the problems he had, even black smoke coming out of the exhaust. New MAF and my truck is running great!

Yeah you were totally right. I'm still getting a P1320 Ignition Primary code which the dealer thinks has to do with the mechanic possibly putting in the wrong coils. I'm going to wait a little while and let all of this digest before I tackle that one.

Yeah you are having the exact same problem I was having. I also too had P1320 which was fixed by replacing my coils. For the R50 there are three different types of coils, so he very well might have put in the wrong ones. I also had wrong coils installed in my car. I went to this site for the correct coils:

http://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/2001/i ... _coil.html

My car was manufactured 08/00 so I had to get the 01-01-00 To:08-31-00 production range coils.

Awesome thanks! Do you know where to find the manufactured date? I'm guessing it's on the door or under the hood somewhere.

It should be on the sticker on the drivers door jamb.

Well the misfire got so bad that it was happening 100% of the time and the shaking was violent. So I took it in to a trusted mechanic and together we tested continuity between the coils and the ECU then tested all the coils and everything was kosher. So the only part left could be the ECU. The old mechanic told me that he swapped out the ECU and it didn't change anything. I put the extra ECU in and it wouldn't start so that tells me that he never had the key programmed and never actually checked it. I took it to the dealer, gave them the alternate ECU to program. $115 later I started it and the violent misfire was gone but it keeps throwing the same 1320 code. I'm afraid that the issue persists and might trash the current ECU. So when buying coils, if you purchase the wrong ones will they still fit? If so then I can go back to the guy that replaced them and have him put in the correct ones. The trusted mechanic is under the impression that the wrong coils will not fit and have the wrong connector. If someone can verify this it would make my quality of life improve drastically. The dealer also told me that he thinks they put in the wrong coils.

Yes they will fit, but for my '01 Cylinder 1 is a different coil, it has a longer stem. Are your coils black or grey? Is the cylinder 1 coil different from the rest? The black ones are the same for all cylinders, the grey ones fit the same but there are two different models.

I wish I could chime in but they changed the coil design pretty drastically by 2003.

asnorton, yes, the #1 coil is different from the other coils.

For what it's worth, when all my 6 coils were changed, the ecu had to be reflashed to accomodate them.... That's what the guy I bought it from (an infinity master mechanic) told me...

My CEL 1320 turned off after about 50 miles of driving after I had the correct coils installed, I had the wrong ones in there.

Well If these pics are correct then I've got the wrong coils installed. My production date is 04/00 and I don't have the black dot on my 2-5 coils. Can someone with an 2001.0 confirm that their 2-5 coils have the dot?

Thanks!

I have an 01, and I'm pretty sure I remember seeing dots on my coils when I changed the plugs.

Don't know if you're still monitoring this thread, but I went through everything on my 01path, all new plugs, buying a new coil and moving it around, new MAF (both maxima and pathfinder), on rail injector cleaner...turned out to be bad gaskets. What finally convinced me to let a mechanic get inside the engine was 1. that the shaking was unbearable and 2. after trying the MAF, I got a misfire on cylinder 3 one day then two days later go misfire on #5 (and #5 had the brand new coil in it). They cleaned and "ohm'd out" the injectors (thinking at first that I needed a new injector) and replaced the intake gaskets and everything is fine so far.

Well my issue was 2-fold, a bad MAF and having the wrong coils. Glad to see yours is operating normally, this dept. can be tricky.

k i just read through this whole thread very carefully and it sucks to hear that people have such hard times with their pathys and qs but it's great to know that i am not alone.... k so just got my obd 2 scanner back from my ex and i decided before i do the mod to my downstream o2 sensor i should read my codes to see if anything has changed.... basically the codes i am getting are p141, p430 p300 and p1320.... the only that is new to me is the p141
1. what is this code? i'm thinking it has to do with the first o2 sensor going bad or something..
2. after reading through this thread i realized that all of these issues could be or are likely related... like my coils are bad so it's throwing all different codes at me.... i guess i just would like some feedback of where i should begin..... i think i'm going to start with the plugs and coils and work from there... somebody earlier was saying use your scanner and monitor the o2 sensor to see if it's operating correctly how would i do that? any suggestions would be great especially from those who went through this

Is it just me, or do other folks notice that 75% (or so) of the problems posted on this forum revolve around the 2001 model year?
Even just perusing the subject titles I notice that a majority of them start with " 2001 Pathy/QX4" has.....this problem.
Is it because it was the first year of the VQ35 engine? Just curious, that's all.
(Makes me sort of glad mine's a 2002.)

If I knew what I know now I definitely would have gotten on '02-'04. I'll never buy the first production run of a new generation vehicle again. 1/2 way through the '01 model production they changed the ignition coils and we've got lots of MAF issues. Other then that I think they're pretty typical. Having a sticky about those 2 issues with the 2001's would probably be beneficial.

It's been running great and it hasn't thrown a code yet.

How do you tell if you've got a 2001 or 2001.5? I assume by manufacturing date?

Your vehicle's production date can be found on the driver's door. Dates 01/01/2000-08/31/2000 are 2001's and 09/01/2000-06/30/2001 are 2001.5's. I pulled this info off of Partsgeek's ignition coil specs.

Great, thanks for the info. I've got an 2001.5, then. Do you know of any significant differences between the two?

The only difference I've run into so far is with the ignitions coils but I'm sure there are other things that they changed. Chances are if you're looking for parts they'll be for the later model. Now that I think about it there are 2 different headlamp ballasts so they might have changed those during the '01 production. Maybe you could confirm by checking yours and posting how many connectors each one has.
