Well, my quest for a good, used left rear actuator continues. Haven't been able to find one out there so if anybody knows of one, let me know.

Also, I stopped by an Infiniti dealer yesterday and he informed me of the $14+ price per quart of "Active Suspension Fluid" (It was weird to be happy about the price since he had guessed it was over $25/quart before he checked the price) and that the system would need 6 to 9 quarts of the stuff. To boot, he also said it takes a special computer to properly set up the system once it's refilled.

Is this info correct?

Is there any kind of alternate fluid available?

Is there a procedure to refilling the system once I’ve got the actuator problem fixed? I’d like to do it myself if I can.

I’m desperate to find a left rear actuator, email me if you know of a source.

So since the topic of active came up again, I've always wondered is an active suspension preferrable to a standard suspension w/ tokico's etc.? Cost not being a factor as I know it's a ton more expensive to maintain.

Reason being I may look for a very used active Q to work on and restore, but that is a long ways off.

I emailed Texasoil and he replied that he discourages rebuilds and he reserves his stock of actuators for his accumulator customers (which is fine -- but doesn't help me). I'm simply trying to get my ship back on the road for now before I do anything more in depth.

Run a search on active to standard conversions. It is possible to convert your suspension to a standard model which is much cheaper.

check out infinitipartsusa website,joe has assembled a kit to convert an active car to standard suspension! All you need to do is give joe a call and find a decent shop to do the swap!

The actuators are very robust, and rarely fail. I am assuming yours is leaking around the piston, and not the accumulator-small "dome shaped piece" on the side.

Search this site, and the net, for the names of some yards that specialize in Nissan and call them. All years fit, and your chance of a DOA part is very slim. It will not have any nitrogen charge in the accumulator, but neither do your other three. Since the accumulator is flat, you should not have to pay much. They list at about $900-but the one they have is not fully functional because it has gone flat, guaranteed.

And you do not need a consult to set up the system, you bleed it and set the height (if needed) manually. You may need a quart or two of fluid, max.

The job should be no more difficult than changing one shock, and the time to bleed the system. To refill the fluid, pour it in and bleed with the pump running.

Get a service manual and read the entire active chapter before you try anything.

To give you an opinion on the active vs standard, in my opinion the Q45a is the best combination of ride and handling in a large sedan that has ever been engineered. Most members have not ridden in one that works, and never will. But, believe me, it's a treat.

I really like my 90, it's rough and ready, and much faster than my 91 a. But I miss the wonderful ride every day!

I agree! I have driven my boss's 1993 Q45a recently (system was fixed completely by Infiniti last year) and the active suspension is awesome!

Would I have bought one originally when I bought my 1991Q or my 1995Q? No, couldn't afford it then, OR to keep it in good condition now.

i don't know different if feels with active suspension, but i have driven sopdadope's car after the conversion. and to tell the truth for a car that weights 4000+ pounds it was great. and from what i hear the whole active suspension system is heavy also. for more info about active suspension...you might want to shoot sopdadope and email.

That's the information I am looking for.

Will Alldata give the information on the active suspension? I guess I'd rather buy a subscription to that instead of a whole service manual. I'll check it out and post the results if I don't hear anything here.

I'll try infinitipartsusa.com for the fluid -- support those who are supporting the forum, right?

jerrodl, I think you will find alldata rather useless. A manual is a lot better expenditure of funds. Might look on ebay or the B/S/T Forum here. AZhitman had a 1992 manual. The 1990-1992 are very very similar, especially if the 1990 and 1991 has the updates.
