Well as most of you know I been tracing a bad igniton problem for a long time.

I finally got my motor back together today and went to fire it and it said BOOM!!!

Bad backfire!!

So We pull all 6 coils out and put spark plugs in them and as soon as I turn the ignition switch on all 6 coils will fire at the same time and its a HUGE BLUE SUPER spark. Its strong

As I turn the motor over they fire as they should in order but the spark is weak looking.

What I did find is if I unplug the hot power wire to my Gizzmo 2step launch control and turn on my ignition switch they will not fire until I hook power to the unit. (Which leads me to believe the unit is faulty) But this is my 2nd gizzmo unit, I am going to contact the monday and see if anyone else is having the same problems as me.

Im not going to fix the problem as for the stock setup. Im ordering a Megasquirt ecu monday and going to the ls2 coils.

But I just wonder if anyone else has had there ignition coils to fire when turning the switch on? This results in some bad backfires when you have fuel in the cylinders.

Since I am on propane now I am going to only use the Megasquirt for timing purposes only so it should be a simple setup.

Well I have been emailing with gizzmo tech and here is his response:

Sorry, but I spoke directly with Ray Carter, the designer of this piece and he says there's nothing inside that can cause this unless it's seeing an igniter signal when the key is switched on. He also said he has never had a report of any similar behavior nor ever seen it in testing where things are intentionally mis wired just to see what would happen.

I would suggest using a low voltage multimeter on the ignitor wire to see what signal you have coming in when the key is switched on. It may very faint, enough to trip the launch interface although not enough to trip the coils when the interface is disconnected. If that signal is faint enough, you may be able to correct for it by using a very small, 1k or so resistor directly in the ignitor signal wire from the ECU. This is not a normal thing to need, but it does sound like you're getting a signal of some kind.

The only other alternative is that something inside the launch board may have broken or short circuited and is creating it's own ignitor signal when it's powered on. Again, we've never seen this happen, but it's the only alternative if there is no signal at all coming in on the ignitor signal wire from the ECU.

Do you guys think something in the cas is messed up causing this problem?

Sounds like there is some kind of short in the IGN wiring to the ECU because the CAS only reports signals at certain angles of cam rotation. I think 0* and 120* if memory serves me right.

If the wiring is correct and not shorting, then the ECU is grounding all 6 coils signal wires simultaneously. That would be the fault of the ECU and highly unlikely. Could also be that the coil packs are connected to a switched ground somehow.

I would check the coilpack wiring from top to bottom because you have been having ignition problems since installing that Gizzmo unit. I'm wondering if some wires didn't get connected funny. Focus on the grounds because the coils obviously have power.

Well I spent some time with it tonight. I got mad and Completely unhooked the gizzmo unit and re-wired the ecu back stock and BOOM PROBLEM fixed. The car fired right up and sounded great. No more sparking with the ignition switch or anything. So something in the gizzmo is f***ed again. I HATE that unit. Pure garbage IMO.

Get a different two-step unit. You have had nothing but issues with it and there are other options. Maybe not as cheap but they'll perform.

ya i would love to get rid of thid unit. I think since im going too the wasted spark setup with the ls2 coils I can run a msd2 step setup. I emailed gizzmo again to tell them there product is junk lol. im sure they gotts hate me by now.
