Getting a separate capture card may not be a bad idea, as long as it will capture audio as well. Also, on the DVD-burner...i know that Lite-On just came out with a few models and Best Buy had them on sale for under $100. Lite-On makes the best burners, hands down.

Vengeance - Tell me more about that. I like the idea of getting the software WITH the capture card, but I'm interested in heearing what you recommend and how it would work together...

Thanks for the heads-up Nick - I'll check out Best Buy.

Can I install that myself?

There are cheap DVD writers available, but this is one area that you should not skimp on if you can afford it. Go with the Sony 510A, Teac (forget the model name) or Pioneer DVR-06 units that allow writing to all kinds of DVD formats. You may need to be able to write both the DVR+R and DVD-R formats to be able to play them back in any ol' consumer DVD player. Kinda essential if you are planning to send the video's to family and friends! :)

These multi-format writer units can also use the re-writable DVD formats (like DVD+RW and DVD-RW) - which makes having a humongous HD a little less important! You can use the re-writable DVD's for temporary data storing as well as system backups.

(ALL OF YOU do system backups often, right?!? RIGHT?!? If not, then you will deserve what you get when your HD crashes!)Quote »so I need a really cheap, small-capacity HD for it. Again, suggestions?[/quote]Again, if you can afford it, get a drive that is at least 7200 rpm and has a larger cache (like the 8MB Wester Digital units). This kinda becomes essential for good image capturing. Fry's often has sales on the Western Digital 80GB and 120GB units for less than $100.

If you get the drive at Fry's, make sure that you get the one with the larger cache. For example, Western Digital makes essentially identical drives with both 2MB and 8MB caches. The part numbers are very similar ... something like WD1200JB and WD1200BB if I recall correctly. I think the JB has the larger cache.

The aforementioned Lite-On burner does both + and - so I would still stick with that one.

ok... so i kinda skipped over most of the posts on here... but IMO it would be easier to kinda help with some of these thigns if you went to http://www.pcpitstop.com and ran there full system tests and post the link to the results. that way everyone can see all the specs and everythign without you having to dig around and try to find them. just my 2cents

The current price of $20.50 is excellent. Will not stay there though ...

Best Buy had it on sale for $90.00 last weekend. I personally wouldn't go above $75 plus shipping.
