There are cheap DVD writers available, but this is one area that you should not skimp on if you can afford it. Go with the Sony 510A, Teac (forget the model name) or Pioneer DVR-06 units that allow writing to all kinds of DVD formats. You may need to be able to write both the DVR+R and DVD-R formats to be able to play them back in any ol' consumer DVD player. Kinda essential if you are planning to send the video's to family and friends!
These multi-format writer units can also use the re-writable DVD formats (like DVD+RW and DVD-RW) - which makes having a humongous HD a little less important! You can use the re-writable DVD's for temporary data storing as well as system backups.
(ALL OF YOU do system backups often, right?!? RIGHT?!? If not, then you will deserve what you get when your HD crashes!)Quote »so I need a really cheap, small-capacity HD for it. Again, suggestions?[/quote]Again, if you can afford it, get a drive that is at least 7200 rpm and has a larger cache (like the 8MB Wester Digital units). This kinda becomes essential for good image capturing. Fry's often has sales on the Western Digital 80GB and 120GB units for less than $100.
