s13 blacktop

went from 3rd to 2nd instead of 4th. gave it gas and for a sec, maybe two, there I noticed it rev'd up too fast and let go. went home drove normal, nothing over 3.5k rpms noticed a rattle when you give it gas but none on idle. I went under the hood and open the trottle to rev it and noticed its from front of engine. Timing chain? safe to drive now? Did I really f*ck up and should I look forward to major engine work or is this a minor work to be done?

If you think its in the head then pull the valve cover and check it out.

is that it? thanks, I'll try that this weekend. I'm hoping the tensioner is just loose. Anyone know a link to a good timing belt DIY write up? I hope I don't have to go as far as replacing it.

Do a compression check. Turn the crank with a wrench, if there's play in the rod bearings you'll feel a thunk in the wrench. Pull the valve cover and check for anything out of sorts. Drain the oil and look for any bits that made it down there.
