Great forum. Looks like you guys out here know how to superpower the G's ... As for me, I am good with computers but am a zero when it comes to modding them cars. I have a very simple goal, and I call for help from you gurus to help me reach them...I am going to buy an '08 G sedan very soon, and want to be able to do 2 things -1. Install a computer(carputer) in the G. 2. Give the car a more sporty feel from the outside. Having said that, I dont have a lota money to spend, and neither can I do it all by myself(have to spend on proffesional installations). In other words, Im looking for the best bang for my bucks...

What mods do you prescribe? Where can I buy them? Where can I get them installed? How much do you think I'd have to spend? What are some applications that I can install on a carputer that would be of some value(like maybe to analyze my gas millage, or I dont know ......

Also, I would LOVE to be able to hack into my car just like I do on my comp... where do I start ?

Welcome to the forum.

What the heck is Install a computer(carputer) in the G ??Just curious.I'm sure that there are people who have done/investigated just about anything you can think about doing to a G here. Stick around for a while. And if you like, you can search the archives for information related to your questions. Great stuff there.

A carputer is just a small computer like a desktop in a car.

Options for placing the puter are kind of limited, basically to the trunk area, more specifically the spare tire compartment. As for storage mediums, I would personally go with flash memory instead of a HDD, otherwise a laptop HDD such as one from IBM/Lenovo with Active Protection software (or any other brand with some sort of shock-monitoring software that will stop the HDD when shock is detected). I would also highly recommend Bluetooth capabilities for phones, PDAs, keyboards, etc.

As for applications of use, you can connect it to the car's diagnostic port and know exactly why your Check Engine Light is coming on, if it does. You can join your wireless and GPS and log locations with WiFi. As for actual apps, I don't know where to lead you, but I do know there is an open-source interface called RoadRunner.

As for the outside of your car, you could lower it, get new rims, a body kit, exhaust, intake...possibilities are almost endless.

Welcome to Nico!!

I'm a programmer so the last thing I want to see in my car is a carputer!

Hey Guys, thanks a mill for the warm welcome! Well probably "installed is not the right word I used" but you get the drift.... Roadrunner is cool but I guess it does far too much than what I intend to do. I would be contended with the wi-fi, GPS bridge, bluetooth, prolly some app to do some voice command recognition etc etc.. very macro stuff that adds to the "functionalities" of the car. It would be cool to be able to monitor wots happening under the hood, but does it makes sense for me to do it when I can’t troubleshoot, let alone tune, the machine inside? Maybe I should read some material to find out what other people have done with carputers.Ok here's a dilemma Im having- should I get the car w/o the fancy nav pkg and then add a puter to add the nav functionally in the car? Similarly what about the sports pkg, will it be better (performance/ $$$) to add non oem parts onto the car or is it better to buy it factory installed? More so if somebody has a link to the possibilities of adding electronics to the Car I'd be interested in that.

Well if you get factory nav, you'll have Bluetooth for your phone with voice command, GPS obviously, it calculates MPGs for you--most of what you're looking for sounds like. You'd probably looking at a very similar prices betwix factory nav and a computer.
