Modesto parents' rights in peril

It promises to be a packed house Monday night when a California school board meets to debate whether to bypass parents and permit "confidential medical services" for students.



Several members of the Modesto school board have already expressed support for the proposed controversial policy that would allow students to leave campus for medical services such as abortions. Brad Dacus of the Pacific Justice Institute explains concerns expressed by many parents. "The school district there is going to conduct a meeting where they're going to be deciding whether or not to allow, as a matter of policy, young girls to leave school without parents knowing about it to have 'confidential medical services' -- that is, abortions or birth-control pills," he says. According to Dacus, that completely ignores the rights of parents to be involved in major decisions that affect their children. "This is a clear affront to the rights of parents," says the attorney, "and that's why we at the Pacific Justice Institute will be representing parents at the upcoming school board meeting this Monday." The PJI attorney goes on to say that a school district that chooses to deliberately hide from parents the fact that their child has had a major medical procedure, or is seeking counseling for serious emotional or substance-abuse problems, is asking for a lawsuit. A final vote on the proposal will be conducted later in August.

So, does that mean that kids under the age of 18 should now be considered adults and the parents will no longer be legally responsible for them? Of course not. Will the school system be liable for the activities and decisions that these students may take if this passes? Of course not, they would blame it on the parents.
