I have a '94 Q45 that needs a radiator, alternator, and water pump replacement that I already purchased and need a mechanic to install them. There is a Mobile Mechanic in my area that charges $125 to come out to your house and this charge is waived if I accept the work/price estimate. He won't give me an estimate over the phone or his hourly rate. My question is this: Does a Mobile Mechanic charge more for the labor charges than a non-mobile mechanic and how much more? Or, should I look elsewhere?

Thanks,

Alternator is tough without a lift. If you charges by the hour, it could be more expensive.

Look for BadQ45t posts about an independent in your area.

?

I don't trust it. Does he have significant experience with the VH45DE? Toss a few questions at him to check. Then, as the final shibboleth, make something up and see if he tries to BS you. Feign ignorance.

There was a mobile mechanic around my way, but he was a former Infiniti Tech. I never used him though. I still have his number, I might give him a call.

I did an alternator on a Q without putting it on a lift...

I bet his hourly rates are high. I'd take it to a shop personally.. the alternator job isnt terrible if people have worked on import cars.

I have replaced the alternator twice (on Q1) on jack stands without dropping the a/c compressor - but you better have some small hands! I had to get help from someone else to get the retaining nut started. Having the radiator out makes it a little easier so there's a little overlap. Anyhow... I tend to agree... I wouldn't want for the guy to get to your house, get a bad vibe about him, and be obligated to pay him $125.
