Howdy all- quick ? for those of you that change/supply your own oil and use Mobil 1- where do you get it and what do you pay? I have used up the last of my junk oil (didn't leave it in there very long!) and am going Mobil 1 or the good Valvoline (Synpower?) from now on. The best price I've seen on the Mobil 1 was at Costco/Price Club, which was about $24-$26 (not sure) for 6. Just curious..... Thanks!:)

Costco is the best I've found in SoCal as well. Even with discounts and coupons at Pep Boys, Kragen, etc, they almost never beat it, since their normal price is around $6/qt.

Around here.MOBIL 1 is usually between 4.40 and 4.99, except for my favorite MOBIL 1 the 0w-40 ( the only 40 weight MOBIL1) which is always 4.99 <if> you can find it.

Valvoline SynPower is always slightly less than MOBIL1 thgeir base oil is not quite as good but I like their detergent package.

Also ( for those who sue 30 weights) their 30 weight is slightly thick which is not a bad thing especially compared to MOBIL1 30's which tend to run thin.

My favorite SYnP{ower is the 5w-40 which meets some impressive specs ( as doe sthe MOBIL1) but alas it's hard to find.

If I was in Cali I would likely run thicker oils than 30 weights.

Maybe 15w-50 or at least a 40 weight , in summer and in summer maybe 5w-40 SynPower, 5w-40 Kendall GT1 Synthetic or MOBIL1 0w-40.

Good inputs guys, thanks! Will probably try the 40W Mo.1 from Costco for starters. Curious if I will detect any (faint) valvle train noise. I have not been impressed w/ the selection or prices in any of the local car parts stores I've been in so far, that much is certain!

Wes:

There is no such animal.

There is 15w-50 and 0w-40 M1 but no 15w-40.

The last time MOBIL1 made a 15w-40 was in SH, and it was a very superior oil (just cuz its the older API, doesnt mean its not as good).

I have won many bets on this 15w-40 mystery, for some reason many of my freinds "see", this rating and when we bet and go back to store to check, its always a 15w-50 or 0w-40 that they saw.

My favorite M1 viscosity for the Q, 0w-40 is real hard to find.I have only found it at Autozone so far and not all of them carry it.

Foolish to BUY and CHANGE your own oil when there's a WalMart in town. $30 gets you a full-service oil change with 6 quarts of Mobil 1. So that's $22 for the oil, and $8 for the labor (I supply my own filter).

Assuming you trust them to put the belly pan back on with atleast two bolts and put the drain plug back in. I actually took a torque wrench with me to Goodyear today when I had the tires installed on "Q2" - they said I'm not the only one who has done that. I wasn't about to let an impact wrench near my freshly indexed new stillen rotors!!!

Fred is dead right about this. The 15-50W is sold at most Sam's Clubs.

I've always used 10W-30 in my 90 Q (117,000 miles), the last few years using Mobil 1. At Costco the other day I saw the following Mobil 1 for sale, all at $23.99 (plus tax) for 6 quarts:

0W-40 / European Car Formula5W-30 / New Car Formula10W-30 / Multi Vehicle Formula15W-50 / Performance Driving Formula

I live in San Francisco, so no freezing weather, and change oil every 3 months/3,750 miles.

Which oil should I be using?

In both of my Seattle Q45s (1995 & new to us 2000) I use 10-30W Mobil 1. Sometimes drive in heat up to 100º F (Oregon summer) with no ill effects in 1995 Q45. Both were Envirolution flushed before converting to M1.

Texas Q45 runs 10-30W M1 also, but does not see summer temps, so maximum is about 94º F.

Q45tech mentions that the only way to dtermine if the oil viscosity the engine is using is sufficient is to measure oil pressure at idle after the car is warmed sufficiently under the environmental conditions in which it will be operating.__________________Brian1995 Q45 & Q45t
