Hey All-I'm sorry you haven't seen me around the board lately. We have all been so busy around here, it now takes four of us just to handle the phone calls. With only so many hours in the day I don't have much time to actually post anymore, but busy is good, right? Anyways, I hate to be a typical salesperson but I did bring in Mobil 1 oil filters for all of you G50 series Q owners & J30 owners. I just wanted to chime in & let you know, here is a link:http://www.trademotion.com/par...=3221If you need ANYTHING from me please feel free to call me at 1.888.216.5328. I'm always here, I may be on another call but if hold on for me I'll get to you as soon as I can, I promise. Your business is always appreciated & welcome. Thanks again everyone!-Joe TesenskyInfiniti of Scottsdale

Hi, Joe!

Any possibilities exist for a Mobil 1 filter for the M45?

That is the best price I have ever seen on mobil 1 filters, period. I live in tax free delaware and I still can't get it below $9..Too bad I already picked up a couple of bosch premium filters at the local autozone..

Ditto! They're like $12 retail around here. Independent studies have been done--M1 filters are among the best, probably right up there with the factory ones so many of us cried and cried about when they were discontinued. If Joe doesn't move these, don't expect him to order any more.

Mobil 1 oil and oil filters have long had an outstanding reputation. The filters have a synthetic element media and the strongest shell on the market. The outside shell is .0195" thick on the large ML-301 or .0170" thick on the smaller ML209. Mobil 1 is maybe the most forthcoming with information since for a long time they have been the 100-year-old scotch of quality oil filters. They are proud of their "Hydrostatic Burst" values which are three times the SAE standard. Their "Pressure Impulse Cycles to Failure" values which are the highest, and only ones I have found; which mean the guts of the filter are made like a tank. The whole filter is an engineering exercise in loving design excess. Is it the best oil filter made or has anyone come up with a better design while Mobil 1 has rested on it's reputation? Lacking extensive and expensive laboratory tests I can only say Mobil Oil filters are somewhere in the top three, in a class of outstanding over achievers. Like all top shelf oil filters the going rate seems to be about $10 off the shelf or $9 if you can cheese a jobber price. From http://www.shoclub.com/lubrica...5.htm

I (or rather my wife) did! Bought 6 for the FY33. Thanks Joe.

Now I am actually looking forward to my old style filters for the VH45DE running out. Maybe I'll alternate.

What are the dimensions of the oil filters that you guys use?

I usually buy mine at WalMart. I looked in the reference book that they have. I found the filter that it said was for the 92Q45. It was tiny. So, I started opening boxes, to try and find a larger one that has the same thread and gasket size. I found one. It is an "ST8A SuperTech" filter. It is approximatly twice the size of the recommended filter. Have any of you guys cross referenced filters like this? Is there any problem with doing this?

Please verify the thread pitch, PMQ.

In some reference manuals & app guides, the 91-94 & 95-99 SR20DE filters are listed as the same, but are NOT.

Repercussions from a "just like IBM" filter are anything but.

The pressure at which the bypass valve opens may be different also.

Good point, Brian.

It's in your best interest to just buy the correct filter, PMQ, although I understand the premise of your question.

Also, the Mobil1 also has an anti-drainback flapper valve in some applications to aid the system in start-up prime. As a cost saving measure, many filter manufacturers do not.

AFAIK, the VH filter has it, if it doesn't, somebody will chime in.

The thread pitch seems to be the same. I am currently using the ST8A SuperTech filter on the Q45. The gasket is the same size as that of the OEM recommend filter. I haven't experienced any problems with the oil system. I don't know if a problem would be noticable.

The problem that I have with the OEM recommended filter is that it is tiny. My mom has a 4cylinder PT-Cruiser with larger filter than that of the Q45. Hmmmm. So, I am now using a filter that has ~twice the capacity of the OEM filter. Is it better/ok to have a larger filter? What would be the benefits of using a larger capacity oil filter?

Also, what do you guys think about the oil filter relocation kits? Will they cause any harm to the engine? Will the oil filter still function like OEM?

While larger filter capacity (and the concomitant increased oil volume) is always a plus, there MAY be drawbacks.

The "SuperTech" filter (or any other cheap filter) may not have the quality filtering media that the OEM and Mobil 1 filters have. Tolerances are looser, construction is shoddy, media degrades or clogs, etc. A little (3 oz) extra capacity does you NO good if the filter doesn't do it's job.

Even Fram / Purolator, as supposedly "name brand" filters are not up to the build specifications of the OEM and Mobil 1 units. I have seen metal shards on the inside of BRAND NEW "cheapo" filters... Nice, eh?

PMQ, if you want to increase oil capacity, here's a project for you (you'll love this):

Get a remote filter mount adapter and kit from Summit Racing (buy the one for the 300ZX, they use the same filter). Use the dual-filter unit, and you've just added nearly 2 quarts of capacity, PLUS you can put your filters in a more reachable location for ease of servicing.

As regards your question on whether a "oil system problem" would be noticeable, the answer (NO) is readily available from Wes's Q.
