I have talked to several shops (including Infiniti Dealership). Most of them don't recommend using Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF for my 93 J30 (178k miles). What's up with that? Everyone on this forum recommends it. Infact, a dealership I spoke to said that Infiniti won't warrant the transmission flush with this product. Independants say that synthetic is not needed on an old car. What gives? Do they just want to have me come back for a rebuild or is there something to this?

I haven't found a BG service in the area that does a complete flush (which seams strange). Nissan in this area won't work on Infinitis.

there is Nissan Dmatic which is different spec than Dexron and is used in some Infinti transmission's.

It is my understanding also that the J30 transmission is properly speced for MOBIL1 ATF.

It's a superior fluid.

I hope their refusal doesnt mean they are putting Nissan Dmatic into their dexron speced transmission's.

Fred..

I think if you use the M1 and you also use the lubeguard additives then it makes it equivalent to Nissanmatic or whatever the stuff is called.....

I think the point is that the J30 transmission is spec'd with the idea that it will use MOBIL 1 ATF. Thus using Nismatic would be worse than using MOBIL 1. I've used MOBIL 1 on my transmissions and it works very well, in fact, I prefer it over the Nismatic stuff.

No shop wants to get blamed for messing something up during a transmission flush. There is always a risk of hurting the transmission by changing the fluid because the process may dislodge some gunk.

I killed a transmission on my '75 Volvo by changing the fluid. I think a guy in S.C. (natsoundup?) experienced transmission problems on his '90 Q after doing a flush.

I'm on my second fill of Mobil 1 ATF on my '92 Q with 192K miles (no sure if transmission is original or not). I say go for it, but if something goes wrong remember you won't get any support from the shop doing the work.

If you've owned the car a while and changed ATF at 30K intervals I doubt you'll have any problems.

Mobil 1 Syn ATF meets the Dexron IIIe specification so does Nissamatic D but Nissamatic D has another spec that is not tested to meet the Dexron standard.

The other spec has to do with the stick slip characteristics of the torque convertor lock up clutch.............4-5-6 ounces of Lubeguard Red/Black Additive will when added to Mobil 1 syn ATF or Current Dexron ATF meet the newer Nissamatic D standard.

Unfortunately as of now no one has figured out how to duplicate the new 5 speed AT ATF ..........YET. I have the specs from JATCO, it may envolve a more complex mixture of additives with Mobil 1.

I used Nissan, Mobil Dexron, Redline Syn, Redline high temp syn, and Toyota Syn.............mostly Mobil Syn in my 2nd AT.......too date it has over 200,000 miles in 2 different Q.....flush, flush, flush when it changes colors is the key. Then flush again soon and flush again soon and flush again soon..........it must have been flushed 8 times in 7 years.

Dennis,

Are you dropping the pan after each and every flush, or some other interval? Thanks

No the old 2nd transmission had only two pan drops and filter changes in the 180k I used it........when it was sold to a customer it got another pan drop, filter change, flush and two new shaft seals. That was a year ago.

The 3rd [remanned unit] transmission hasn't had a pan drop yet and probably has 30k on it .........but flushed twice............guess I'll wait till Spring.

Thanks -- I had the pan drop after the last flush interval. Fluid still looks great after a year and about 9K mi. But I will have it flushed again in a month or so.
