Newbie strikes again!

Just picked my "new" '90 Q (116k miles) up from a well-trusted transmission shop, having taken it in to have them diagnose and fix the "driveline vibration" I'd described in previous posts. After a test drive, the shop manager insists that it's a misfiring or "missing cylinder". Mounts and driveshaft appear to be okay.

Anything over 60mph and you'd swear it runs like a new car.

Sould I be happy or panic-stricken?

My favorite AutoZone has ten Denso spark plugs in stock, thought I'd start there. Is there a good thread to check out before tackling a plug-change? I plan to put some bucks into her for guides, etc. as soon as possible with work done by a local ex-Infiniti tech who works independently now (reffered by a fellow Q owner and now this transmission shop), just want to get her running well and past city inspection for tags while I budget, so I want to DIY as much as possible.

Thanks in advance,JEC

Happy or panic-stricken? Neither or both depending on your personality. Missing cylinder could be several things...hopefully not something expensive, like ECU (unlikely) or ignition packs. Don't use anything but factory NGK plugs. Eat the cost, knowing that they are far less like to fail you than anything else you could use. Scottsdale has those at a good price. A missing cylinder is causing an imbalance, as you already know. This is placing extra stresses on the engine's internal (and external) components and will reduce their life. Since replacing them isn't a cost-effective way of keeping the car on the road, fix the problem ASAP. Spark, compression, and fuel. Those are your 3 suspects. If you're lucky, you'll be able to narrow it down to cylinder's 2, 4, 6 or 8. If you're extremely lucky, you'll be able to narrow it down to cylinder 2!

NO Denso plugs!!!

NGK factory replacements only! The VH45DE's combustion chamber is NOT friendly to weaker plugs.

Oh, I don't think I would trust a transmission guy to diagnose a miss in my Q45.

I would get a second opinion on that one.

Yep, already made an appointment with the independant for a diagnostic tomorrow. Killing me to drive her in the meantime.

Knew to stick with NGK plugs, use them in my motorcycle with an American-built S&S engine of all things. AutoZone had the $6 Denso's as the OEM, next Bosch Platinums (to which I said "No way", see? I'm learning.)

Thanks again for all of the input!
