mis-shift?

Hey... 18 years old... just got my first car... happens to be a 240 with the stock KA24DE in it....

I did lots of research and I ended up choosing the Nissan because of its endless possibilities and the fact that it is not a Honda (no offense to any Honda drivers)

Trying to take off into second I end up grinding the gears... I'm no professional driver, but I know it shouldn't be happening... I am pulling a little towards myself when shifting, so I guess that might be a factor...

I was thinking of upgrading to the OBX Short Shifter, (B&M would be nice, but too much much for my teenage budget)

I know this would help me nonetheless, but would it also help with my gear grinding/mis-shift problem?

doesn't happen, but i have to shift a significant amount slower, not normal for a 240.....

synchros problems.... what do i need to fix that... more importantly... how much money?

also, its a 92 SE with the Super Hicas package... one thing that i have been very confused? is this posi or lsd? because i see people doing LSD conversions so it confuses me

if u have an orange sticker on the rear diff, then you have a lsd, you have to replace the syncros to fix it, im not sure on the price though...

I am also unaware of the costs to replace syncros off the top of my head, but the labor costs could be substantial, because the transmission has to be removed, and the casing taken off, etc. Not a cheap job . . . you might be better off finding a different transmission altogether, they're all the same from 89-98 in the 240's.

It's not worth the cost to get just your syncros done unless you're cryo-treating them or something to make them bulletproof. Cheapest route is another low mileage trans from another 240. You can usually get one at a junkyard for around $300.

or you can just rev-match every time you shift, this would be the lazy and cheap way...but, you might wanna save up for a used transmission cuz it wont last too long

Yes, Posi-traction is an old domestic term for a limited slip differential.

If your car has ABS, and HICAS then it more than likely has an LSD.

The synchro grind is typical for Nissan transmissions, especially into 3rd gear. One thing you can do to help it is change out the transmission fluid. It takes GL-4 and I suggest some Redline Shockproof fluid as it is formulated to live through hell. You'll need enough to fill up the transmission till it begins to come out the fill hole.

Try to warm up the car before you do this... a good 15 minute drive on the highway outta do it. Warm gear oil flows better and it also will do a better job of removing the shavings and contaminate bits from the gearbox.

Use 80w90 or higher.

i dont have a syncro for 3rd gear anymore either double clutch it or rev match or over rev or shift slowly or just do what i do and ram it into gear. eventually your gonna have to get a new transmission cause rebuilding it just isnt worth it...300 bucks and you got a new one. but hey when your gonna do an rb swap this winter a new ka transmission just doesnt make any sense now does it?

Just cause the syncro is grinding on a hard shift doesn't mean it's in need of replacement. Just bang it in there :D ... seems to be the concensus LOL.

I love you guys already...

by the way... i just had my first real street race... some honda civic hatchback pulled up and was revving with his fartcan exhaust... i even had a lady in the front seat... i CHEWED HIS *** worse than a fat kid mowin down a cupcake.

Also pulled up to the lake (THE spot around here) and I saw a trunk 240 and I went over to talk to the driver and it was a young chick my age.... ****ing turned me faster than linux booting up on a amd 3000... (sorry about the nerdy analogies)

anyway men and/or ladies, thanks for all the advice, and the transmission fluid is gonna be changed within the next week.... if there are any posts relating to changing it that you know of i would appreciate a reply with the link... i will also do some searching..

ttyl all, :D ss240

ss240, it might be that you just aren't pressing in the clutch pedal enough?

After adjusting my clutch pedal (moving it forward--very little slack now :-), I grind my gears much, much less--quite rarely now (just when I forget :icesangel)

It's a worthy topic. My 2nd gear synchro is errr... well used. It doesn't always grind, but it's very difficult to get it in gear. I'm considering some Redline MTL to see if that smoothes things out a bit.

It's been a bit colder here these past few days, and shifting is becoming a real *****. I just have to get used to applying a bit more force to shift in to 2nd. There's nothing more embarassing than pulling 1/4 of the way in to an intersection, trying to shift in to 2nd, missing the shift and loudly revving the engine while coasting. :oface

I'm just glad I haven't been rear-ended yet.
