So, as some of you may, or may not know, I have custom pistons in my motor. I increased the compression with custom forged pistons. I did this because I never intended to run lots of boost or make lots of power, and I wanted to gain some low end grunt and increase my TQ ratings across the board.

To do this I did some research inregards to the compresssion ratio (CR) of the CA18DE found in the Pulsar. What I found, 3 years ago when I built my motor, was that the CR of the Pulsar was 10:1, except in 89, when it dropped to 9.5:1. So I found someone who had a piston from a USDM CA18DET from an 89 Pulsar.

I sent the piston off to CP, and told them to put that dome on the CA18DET piston profile they had in stock. A few weeks later I've got my shiny new pistons and I put the motor together.

Then I tried tuning it. Since this was my first attempt at tuning, I assumed the trouble I was having trying to get it to not detonate was from me being a newb. I knew the extra compression would require more fuel and retarded timing, but I was running AFR's in the mid to upper 10's and total timing of 5-8° at 15psi.

Tonight I just discovered that ALL USDM CA18DE's had 10:1 CR. and that I screwed up big time when I built my motor 3 years ago.

That also explains why this motor still makes the power that it makes with the excessive fuel and heavily retarded timing.

Maybe I'll do a write up on a Natural Gas conversion. 120 octane, here I come!

Ouch man. I guess it helps with the off boost performance though!

Yup, helps with spool time too!

So not really misinformation FTL, but misinformation FTW, right? If it runs well enough with 10:1 compression I think you win.

It runs fine, but not well on pump gas.
