I swapped out my Magnefine inline transmission filter today, and wanted to see what the filter media looked like after a year. Here's a little background:

Some of you may remember that when I first got the car, the transmission fluid was so bad that it was purple with a pearlescent look to it, and clearly had severe particulate contamination. I was thoroughly convinced I'd be putting a transmission in it soon. I dropped the pan and looked at the filter screen, and thankfully it was clear. I cleaned out the pan and the schmutzed-up magnet, replaced the screen and gasket, and refilled with fresh Dexron III fluid and added the Magnefine. Still pretty dirty, but better. A couple months later I got a flush done at Iffy Lube with Dexron III, and the fluid was better still. 2 months after that the fluid was looking a bit funky again, so I did a BG flush at work with Wolf's Head Universal Synthetic ATF and added the B&M 70268 transmission cooler (around August 2010.)

The fluid has been fine ever since, and I decided to swap out the Magnefine and take a look inside it. I cut it open and looked at the paper media, and it was VERY CLEAN! I was able to blow through the filter prior to opening it, and it had barely more resistance than the new one. I also took a gander at the magnet, and it was nearly spotless. There was just a bit of stuff on it, nothing like the thick layer of fuzz i Cleaned off the pan magnet last August.

The transmission is still shifting great, and I'm hoping it'll last until 300K along with my motor. I plan on switching to Amsoil ATF in the near future to go along with my Amsoil motor oil, which I am very happy with, BTW.

I will say that as far as the Wolf's Head fluid goes, it wouldn't be my first choice, but after using it for a year and seeing the condition of the fluid I am pretty happy with it's performance.

Wish me luck on the 300K goal...

sounds like you caught it before the final damage was done. I don't know that you can put 300k more on it but you can sure try :).

As for Amsoil, I have it running now in all 3 of my cars crank cases, transmission's, and rear ends. Great stuff, and if your buying it right the price is just alittle more than Mobile 1 and the same price as redline. While i don't know that is better than redline, it is the only oil that stopped my old 300ZX lifters from tapping. Before that I tried redline, mobile 1, royal purple, Syntec, Valvoine Synthetic, castrol GTX, you name it, i tried it. Nothing could stop those lifters from tapping...enter 3 years ago I tried Amsoil and it was gone forever.

I wasn't going for ANOTHER 300K, I just want the car to get to 300K without grenading any of the drivetrain/chassis. Normal stuff is fine, struts, injectors, etc. I just don't want to do an engine swap, transmission swap, etc. But thanks for the vote of confidence!

Nothing is better than doing a mechanical ATF exchange and seeing the bad fluid come out and being replaced by the new good fluid. :dblthumb:

Of course I don't wait that long long so it is way less dramatic.

lokim, got a trick for you.....no need to cut the magnefine filter open,as behind that label located in the center of the filter, you will find the filter is constructed in 2 pieces and actually unscrews in the middle!

Put that high quality synthetic ATF in, and perform a drain/fill every 15K and you will experience a good long living transmission! Hint, if you park the Q nose up on a inclined driveway/road, you can get 5 quarts out{45%} with a single drain/fill.....thats been my secret to a perfectly operating transmission at 282+ thousand miles and counting!

Well $hit on me! I had no idea it unscrewed! Good tip on the uphill parking...
