What is the absolute minimum speed to drift, if there is any?

With some experimentation, I have ended with the results of 50mph, but I am asking for others' opinions and thoughts.

depends one the surface, if its wet tarmac, then about 5mph and some throttle feathering to get sideways, if its dry, well its all your preference and what your going to do in the corner, it also depends on entry technique.....

i have found that about the lowest speed i could get the back end around was about 30- 40 with clutch kick. my side brake didnt seem to catch that low, but mine may have worn pads our back too, i dunno.

yea i notice as my back pads wear down the ebrake dosnt have the gripping power that it used to, get new pads, or adjust it slightly to take up the slack. just make sure that when you are done that the rear brakes arent dragging.

*tip*- dont try to go faster then what you think you can do, and test the turn before you slide it. gotta be carefull for that little bit of dirt at the apex. front tires loosing grip in middrift is not cool or safe.

I think it's about 20-25 in rain for me, and 25-30 in the dry for simple power oversteer, no clutch kicking/slipping. ::shrug:: My front tires are pretty good but my rears are oooold. Not bald but old, so it's pretty easy to get them to slide. This is just my experience.

**edit** this is for fairly sharp corners though, not wide ones. I'm talking autocross style corners**

Do you consider gymkhana drifting? If so then it would be a very low speed.

I don't consider gymkhana a makeshift drift run or anything, no. But I believe that a drift is still a drift. That said I believe that yes, drifts can be excecuted at gymkhana speeds as well as track speeds, and a drift is still a drift whether it's done at a drift session, a parking lot, or at a gymkhana event. Do you agree? (just curious, not trying to be a smart***)

have you ever tried drifting very tight turns in 1st gear?

i'm talking almost U turn tight

you can drift at any speed...watch D1, they get into 1st gear turns where the edges of the track are like 3 ft apart

i'm going to what?

you mean i'm going to run out of RPM in 1st gear?

if you say so...why do the D1 guys do it then if it's such a wrong thing to do?

lets do this, you go to the next D1 event and go tell kazama, taniguchi, nomuken, suenaga, kumakubo and all those other D1 guys, DONT GO INTO 1ST GEAR IN THAT TINY HAIRPIN! YOU'RE GONNA "TACK OUT"...see what they tell you after their translator stops laughing

Actully the drift cars have anywhere from 300+whp 400 is kinda high and excludes some cars.

I just deleted my posts cause I dont want to argue today. Just drift whatever speed you feel comfortable with.

Deleting posts in defeat is weaksauce.

The only talk of minimum speed drifting I've ever heard was in Initial D, and I don't know how much credence I've ever given that. LOL.

I surely wasnt defeated but in this subject you cant tell someone how fast they need to drive. They need to figure it out on there own

Heh. Ever try drifting when the roads are covered in ice? Its possible with almost no speed at all.

It's all good. I'm just saying I can drift at that speed, so it seems a good starter/practice speed. Of course it's a little different at faster speeds but being able to slide at low speed I find helpful. It may also make it easier to slide at higher speeds when you have so much more inertia to work with. That's just my theory though. I agree though, the "minimum speed" is whatever you can do/want to learn to do. ::shrug::
