I need to get a small battery in order to install my fmic. I see there's a few options out there, looks like the westco is the most popular. My question is, whats the minimum cold cranking amps required for a redtop sr20 motor to start up? I don't want to have any problems with startups or dead batteries, so I want to make sure I get a powerful enough battery.

I was looking at stock Miata replacement batteries, but they only have like 320 or 330 CCA compared to the westco's 475. Will that be enough to hold? I'm just trying to save some money, so please let me know what all you guys are running. Thanks!

More cranking amps GENERALLY means more Ampere Hours which denote battery longevity.

So is there say a minimum amount of CCA required for a redtop 240 to run? I've even heard of people running lawnmower batteries on there cars. Anybody know?

Miata battery is labeled as a T battery which is technically a "Tractor" battery.

A miata or westco battery work just fine. Pick one.

I ran a SVT battery for 2 years. Not sure the exact CCA but it was over 300. But during the 2nd winter the battery was too weak to start the car if it sat overnight below 30* temps. I run a Optima Redtop thats just sitting behind my passenger seat. My SVT battery still works in warm weather so i use that when i go to the track or inspection. But just a warning with the little batteries in cold weather. A Jump Box is good to have in case of it dying in cold weather.

Sweet, I might try that out. So you never had a dead battery or any problems with it? I know the stock miata batteries put out just above 300 cca's, so I might try one of those. But lawnmower batteries are alot cheaper!

I actually just picked one up at napa for 45 bucks, squeezes in there just perfectly. Almost finished installing the front mount, so I'll post some pics when I'm done. I'd def. recommend this battery, it has 475 cca, just the same as the westco, but half the price. It's the exact same length and height, just 1.5" wider, so it's a tight fit once you drill out the hole for the cold pipes. I think it was a 21R battery, not totally sure though, i'll find out tomorrow, because I dont' even know what car it's for.

Yeah, my core is 23x11x3" fits pretty nicely on there. Good luck with your setup! Mine was just an ebay kit, so it took some messing around to get the pipes to line up properly. What kit are you getting put on?
