Took my dash out today to replace a instrument panel bulb. It looks as if it had been taken off previously as there were a couple of screws missing and the bulb in question was actually missing. I started having negative thoughts about someone possibly having turned the miles back

I have some history and in 1997 when it was 3 years old it was handed back after a 3 yr lease with 26,000 miles. Then in late 99 the title was transferred with a mileage of 46,000

Then title was changed again in late 2002 with 66,000

i bought it in Oct 2003 with 76,000

Any thoughts on how to check if it has been tampered with?

Closest thing I can think of is carfax, this is one of the things they are decent at.

The milages involved seem relaistic and consistent.

Does the gas pedal have unusual wear for a lower mile car?

Fred..:)

Rover, The mileage does sound reasonable for your year, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Do the carfax to put your mind at ease. I bought my Q last Feb. from a member on this site. I was told the mileage was 98K. Immediatly after buying the car I drove it to get the guides done and on the ride home noticed the odometer wasn't working. Soon found that it works only sometimes (maybe every 2 or 3rd time I take the Q out). The only knock against the sale of the Q would be that the previous owner knew the odometer wasn't working properly (he never mentioned this). My mileage is now around 101K but estimate it somewhere between there and 120k. Not really that concerned since I plan on keeping her until she dies or I get her replacement, an off-lease M45 or G35 coupe! I would try and sell the Q to another NICO member if possible, so now all know the truth!!! I got a service history printout, and sure enough, there was a speedo assembly replacement when it had around 60-70k miles(can't remember off the top of my head). I'm thinking that maybe the connection is loose since it works sometimes. Haven't had the inspiration to tear it all apart yet. Maybe. Could be the same on yours. Jeff

My odometer on my J just quit working. Don't know if it will be intermitent like yours is or my previous 240SX. I know I can get a second hand sending unit with different mileage than my vehicle but does anyone know where these units can be repaired so that I can keep the original mileage that is showing on my odometer.

I believe a call to Joe at Infiniti Scottsdale will solve the problem. If the J is the same as the Q (in regards to odometer repair), and if I remember correctly, should be in the $200-250 ballpark.Jeff

We bought our 91 SE-R new in 91. The odometer quit working a year or so later at 15k miles. I can't remember the name of the dealer in Jacksonville (Atlantic Blvd by Regency area) but they installed a new one but wouldn't set the mileage to 15k, instead they left it at zero.

But then again, they were the same dealer who told my wife & then me that I needed a timing belt at 50k miles on my SR20DE.

I asked that they give me a quote in writing, funny, never heard back from them. ;)

Your mileage doesn't sound out of whack to me. Call Infiniti customer care & they can retrieve the archives on the service records on the car & tell you if there's been any work done by a dealer.

What a bunch of idiots  too bad they didnt give you a quote, I would have loved to see that one. My first SE-R the odometer stoped at 248,000 and on my G20T the odo isnt smooth till it reaches 15 mph its kinda jumpy.

Because a dealer shop cannot verify the mileage they cannot reset odometers to a specific mileage. You were probably asked to sign a form stating that the new odometer was purchased at zero and your records on that vehicle state that "Mileage is Unknown". I just recently had this conversaion with my independent and he sugested that I avoid the dealership so I wouldn't have this problem. It can be a stumbling point when the vehicle is sold. According to my independent mechanic, odometers are sealed and cannot be adjusted without physically damaging the cases. I just noticed that my odo is working again so it will be intermitent until I replace it. There is a recycled parts depot in downtown Orlando that has a good supply of J30 stuff.

Because the Q/J can go 180k or 200k without much paint wear [assumming it was never repainted] and the 90-93 and even 94-96 assembly can be swapped easily [from a junkyard entire display]............many may be incorrect.

Especially if multiple owners and quick flips of titles and states.

Those out of place 89-99k with less than 10k per year after fast rise to 60k service at dealer on the print outs........then nothing no data.

But some cars can sit 6 months at a used car dealer before being wholesaled.

Do your research.
