I like air conditioning. and my 89 240 is all out of r12. So if I got a sr20 does it come with the new refillable style AC?

If you bought an SR20, you'd be buying an engine. Most likely it would not include all the parts for a/c, and if it did, it'd probably be an empty system anyway - AND likely to leak, since I don't think they're real "gentle" when removing the front clip....

R12 is "refillable", you just have to fix your leak (which is what I'd recommend).

R134 is the "new" coolant you refer to, and although it's cheaper by the pound, it will leak out just as easily, and it doesn't cool as efficiently. Plus you have to replace your receiver and drier (and possibly your compressor) when you switch over.

So to answer your question, if you want your a/c to work, go get it repaired and recharged with R12.

that article is kindof old tho

"some say there’s enough R-12 stockpiled to go well beyond the year 2000"

but i have no clue how much it is. FYI my 93 has R134 and it blows ice cold (mutch colder faster than my dads accord with 134) Also i think... think... that 93 was the first 134 year for the 240. you chould be able to get the stuff from a later car.

And most complete motorsets and clips have the lines that you need for the SR compressor.

Umm, Yes. shop on Padonia road in Hunt Valley MD. Quoted me at just over 400 for 4lbs (to refill my Nissan Stanza).

Clearly I opted for no AC.

a members.aol site as a source?

EDIT: well, they did have labor, and some type of Eco-Hazard charge.. So the stuff was probably more like 80-90/lb.

$80/lb shop price = $40/lb if you buy it yourself (or get a mechanic to buy it for you).

A far cry from "a few hundred per pound."

Sorry if you didn't like my source - It's a good article, though. I'll do better next time. :D

R-12 is "almost" illegal now. It is too much of a biohazard and O-zone destroyer, so in the US, you must have a special license to purchase the stuff, along with proper disposal etc equipment. This is why so many people who do still sell R-12, must sell it at such a high price. Prices may vary depending on source.
