Ask her for all service records. Important that timing belt has been done. Check all electrics, especially window and sunroof motors. Did it pass inspection recently? For the mileage, this is good price as long as it's been well looked after. But beware that some common maintenance on this car will be more expensive than a regular Nissan, as many parts are exclusive (pricey) to the J30. Chances are you will need to put some money into it in the near future, unless she really kept up with the maintenance. Best bet: see if she'll allow you to take it to a local dealer or service shop. For between $100-$300, most shops will do a full inspection to see if there are any lurking issues. It's a cheap investment for your peace of mind in this potential purchase! Good luck....

93s and early 94s had a 60k timing belt, its time for the second service on this car. If I had to bet, I'd wager it hasnt been done. Timing belt service can be expensive (cam seals, water pump, thermostat, etc, are recommended at the same interval). Some $300 in parts, plus labor of $500 or more. Figure that in the price.

While the J is an awesome car, and quite reliable, this is only the case when routinely maintained. If not, youre looking at extensive rehab and money it seems you dont have.

i wouldnt mind putting the work into it knowing the car will last me for about a year or two.. as i said my pops works on cars, he rebuilt a whole engine on an altima so maybe he can help out.. i just dont wanna but something prone to having probelms.. well see today what upkeep has been done.. im sure its not that great of condition for the price.. so u get what u pay for...

but overall.. wouldnt i be better off with a good car, then a crap car for the same price.. like wouldnt u rather get a 93 J over a 96 Ford Tauras for the same price? Would a better option be a Nissan Altima??? better gas? cheaper to maintian? like a 93 04 94?

The J30 is a great car to own and if buying one used you need maintenance records as they said above.

Given the fact that the seller is a girl I would also assume that the timing belt has not been replaced. You would need to replace the timing belt, timing belt tensioner, idler pulleys, water pump, thermostat, etc. so this will cost you upfront about $1,000 - $1200 depending and given the age of the car and the mileage I would also look at the struts as they will likely need replaced soon. Another $1K.

I am not knocking the J, I love this car and it is very reliable IF I stress IF you get an owner that properly maintains it. Your rationale for getting a loaded '93 J versus a plain jane '98 taurus I understand but that taurus will be ALOT cheaper to maintain. If by some chance this girl is a stickler for maintenence then you will probably be ok, however, judging by the picture you attached and the cosmetic appearance of the car I would say there is no way she has properly maintained that car.

Take me for instance, I owned a '95 maroon J30T with Black leather. I bought it with 9 miles on the odometer. It was always serviced by the same infiniti dealer in Plano and I have meticulously followed the service manual to a T. I cold the J in '05 when I bought my G coupe. The car had 133K miles on it. the exterior had minor scratches and chips due to normal wear and tear as the car was 10 years old and you can expect that type of minor wear. The interior however was in pristine condition and looked like it just rolled off the factory floor. I didn't even have the tear in the leather on the top of the driver door that is notorious on the J's. The sunroof worked. The timing belts and all mechanics had been replaced at the proper times and I was able to show maintenance records to the buyer on the car from 9 miles on the odometer up to the 133K when I sold it. All of this is what afforded me the luxury of asking $5K for the car and I sold it for my asking price.

If you are going to by a J then you need to look for a seller that is as anal retentive as I am. Anything less and you run the risk of purchasing a money pit.

Just my $0.02.
