Hi everyone,

I just got a a 2008 G35x sedan and I'm wondering if it would be detrimental to use mid-grade fuel (89 Oct) instead of the recommended premium fuel (91 oct). I currently have mid-grade in the tank right now, I can switch to premium right? OR is it possible to use mid-grade and premium interchangeably? Thanks!

Welcome to NICO!

This topic has come up many times before...and there are a few who use regular. However, I would recommend you use what your manual states. The car's computer will adjust for lower grades of fuel.

My rational is that depending on how much you drive, the cost difference of using premium vs. regular is less than one night out, per month (about $30 for normal driving).

If you have up to a half a tank of premium gas and you ad some midgrade gas, it shouldn't hurt anything too much in one fill up---but try to use premium throughout in another fill up--don't make using mid-grade routine. You just only diluted the octane rating by maybe 30% (perhaps). I would generally stay away from regular for our cars, even though it works just fine, except for some loss in horsepower.

Thanks for the advice guys! I used to drive an RSX so switching to premium gas definitely takes getting some used to (for my wallet)!

Some of us have fewer night outs than others

Welcome to NICO

I've used regular 87 octane in my G35 from day one and have experienced no ill effects. I also do not believe dealers deliver new cars to customers with premium?A new WaWa opened recently and they have been a few cents cheaper.I use it with no problem. I commute 2k miles a month so the savings for me is considerable.

Just my $.02

It would cost telco about $90 a month more to use premium. (he already spends over $266! @ $3.33 per gallon) With his mpg and 2k monthly miles, he's using about 80 gallons a month. So for him with the excessive travel, it's more than just a night out.

However, I feel that using premium is the cost of owning a sports coupe. If I wanted to save cash, I'd drive something else. I put on about 700 miles a month...much less fuel! I get about 20 mpg so for me I use about 35 gallons of fuel (around $4 for premium, .20 more than regular) its only $7 extra.

Amen.

If anyone drives a "upscale" Sports Coupe and complains about the price of gas, they bought the wrong car or they should just put the gas in they want to and not care what damage they might do.

I hear ya!!! Wife went out looking from prem today and was lucky to find regular! And, she had to sit in line for that!Planning a trip to see my daughter at ASU so we had to get something!

And, the Coupe will stay PARKED if it runs out of gas and no prem to buy! But, the repoed Furd Exploder drinks regular, so we may be truck'n it if the Coupe gets parked!

We've actually had some debate about this in the altima section...

While using regular does save your wallet in the short run, if your car is asking for premium, you should give it premium for long run savings. Regular gas in a premium car lowers your mpg and power, on average around 2mpgs...

Just did some quick math...

Say you drive 10,000 miles per year. At 22mpg, you will need roughly 454 gallons per year of gas. At $3.50 a gallon for gas, that's $1590 a year in gas.At 24 mpg with premium, you need roughly 416 gallons a year. At $3.80 (premium is no more than .30 more than regular usually, in fact, usually less than that in most areas) a gallon, you will be paying $1583 a year for gas.

$7!!!!! And possibly more based on how much your premium vs regular is...

Is the extra couple cents a gallon really going to kill u? If Infiniti says use premium, I'm using premium.

My gas receipts for the month of August totaled $424.00 plus $70.00 for tolls for my commute to work. I have never experienced any performance issues with my G35. Many owner manuals recommend premium but most vehicles will run fine on regular. Each owner should try it for themselves. For those that drive fewer miles than the price difference each month is small. For me its a considerable expense that I do not feel is worth it.

I put in BP Premium vs 10% ethanol from 711 and wow what a difference!

I wanted to see if there was a major difference in power!

I can say that 10% of the power is gone when you add the ethanol!

I hate that we pay for 100% gas and get only 90%

very true

I only use premium, because it provides smooth power, and no knocking etc.

All but BP lol. Try each and make your own determination. I've been happy with Shell, but others love Chevron. I've heard sunoco is pretty good too.
