Last night was the first episode of the season 13 (at least for us here in the US) and low and behold the Stig came out and removed his helmet... There was a good interview between him and Jeremy. Then at the end of show they said that Schumaker is not the stig, so the is he or isn't he?

I don't believe so.I think he's the only person Ferrari trust to drive the fxx on a private course.

not true. anyone with the money can drive the fxx on a private course (it can only be driven on a private course). i say this because i've seen one in the infield and on the track at lime rock and i know for sure that schumacher wasn't in attendance that day.

My idea of a private course is the one they use on top gear. Not a circuit that holds professional and or amateur races. But now that you said it that way i know what you mean (i think). Its not street legal and and can only be driven on a track. Is that correct?

right, but to add to that, it can only be driven at an event approved by ferrari. so it's not like you can wake up, load up your fxx onto the trailer, and go destroy rubber at your leisure. you would have to get permission from ferrari first.

I watched this online a few months ago. The person who said he had to play the stig is partially correct IIRC. The FXX used in that episode is actually Schumachers personal FXX, which was custom made for him by Ferrari (I know all FXX's are technically custom made, but this one has key differences from the others). They use it as a test car I think. He is the only person allowed to drive it, which is why he played the stig for that episode.

Doesn't Ferrari own and maintain all the FXX's? I didn't think anyone kept one at their house.

greg's nemesis lol wrote:Ferrari has built 30, adding to the 29 that were originally planned. These have all been sold to pre-selected past Ferrari customers, with the exception of one which was retained by Ferrari S.p.A. Ferrari's F1 World Champion driver, Michael Schumacher, received the 30th when he retired from Formula One racing at the end of 2006. Schumacher's FXX differs from others in that it is the only black FXX without a stripe, it comes with red trim on the wheels, it has matte exhaust tips (regular FXX's have chrome tips), and his personal logo is stitched on the racing seats.

FXX owners also participate in Ferrari's testing and brand development programs. As part of the FXX program, the car is maintained by the Ferrari factory. The purpose of this particular program is to allow Ferrari's top customers exclusive access to its most up-to-date technology and to utilize their input in the development of future models. The models are only sold in Europe. Units can be imported, but not owned, in any other continent. The FXX package was reported to cost 1.5 million euros (excluding taxes) (2.1mil USD),[1], including the car and the services provided by Ferrari.
there it is. interesting to know that the one i saw went right back to italy after they were done with it. i wonder who it was that drove it that day, all i know is that that person is a member of the ferrari club of america.

that has got to be the most expensive rental car ever.

Copied from Wiki: Overview

The car uses some technology developed from the Enzo, and combines it with some new developments from Ferrari and its suppliers. However, the car is only a part of the overall program. Customers pay $2.5 million, but are only allowed to drive the car on special track days which are approved by Ferrari. After they drive the car, the owners are entitled to brief Ferrari on the car's performance. Ferrari's sister company, Maserati, has developed a similar car, the MC12 Corsa.

Anyone want to wager on whether Jay Leno has one or not? Or if Ferrari has made an exception with him and is allowing him to keep it on his property?

leno doesn't own any ferraris. owning a certain number of them was a prerequisite to "owning" an fxx.

Uggg, second thread I have seen on this (not this forum)

This episode is likely more then a year old, they are done with season 14.He was driving because its his personal car. Stop worrying about who the stig is, the regularly use different drivers in cases like this where the factory will send along their own guy.

^This. Plus, even if they did announce which drivers were "the stig", it wouldn't impress anyone. They're probably just various F1 test drivers, much like the first Stig was.

Then how are they so consistent? Like all their laps are the same.

Ever watched a race? Professional drivers at the limit are very similar. Take rally races where two guys will drive thousands of miles over 3 days and end up only seconds away from each other.

On tracks, even over an hour of racing its not uncommon for drivers to be less then a second apart...

When your a professional driver, you are close enough to optimum that there is not a lot of variation.

Ugh nevermind. The stig probably is like 12 different people anyways. James May said that if he reveals his identity, he gets fired (that's what happened to black stig).

Clarkson has said many times that all F1 drivers take the same line through the test track.

Pretty much. All their motions are automatic and mechanical.

Schumi has way too much going on in his life to be The Stig. Aside from being back in F1 next season as a full time driver, he's been associated with Ferrari ever since his retirement, helping in the pit, coaching and mentoring Felipe Massa, driving (and wrecking) motorbikes, etc. Mike is a very busy guy.
