I think I going to scoop up a 1990 Miata thats needs a little work. There is a roadster class that races a some local tracks around me. Im thinking of picking it up. Runs fine, but ugly. 800-900 bucks for it.

Looking for opinions of said machines. Ive only driven a Spec Miata race car, so Im just looking for real life opinions for people that have owned them. Im not expecting power like my S13, just balance. Im thinking with very little suspension, it would be fun on the track and maybe to DD at times.

Thanks

I once knew someone who used to race a Miata at Infineon raceway here in Northern California - as I recall, he raced an MR2 prior to that as well. He liked the overall balance of the car and thought it was perfect for what he wanted to get out of it for his races.

I like my miata. I may be getting rid of it soon and DDing the 510 but only to free up some extra cash. Mine's a 90 as well and basically stock except for a hard dog sport bar and eibach springs.

I've autocrossed a friends NA Miata (not sure on the year). Pretty much a bone stock car. So much fun though! It's like a big go-kart. Goes wherever you want it. I'd say buy it.

Check out the rule book for SCCA for the STS class. Those Miata's fit in there perfectly and are the front runners of the class along with the civics. A Spec Miata is a very mild car, much like building an STS class car.

You'll fit fine at 6'1". I dunno how a hardtop's clearance is though. I'd recommend a c-package car as that gets you a torsen rear (Or cruise control cars..all of those have torsens in em)...but you can't argue against a 900 dollar running miata.Get some nice rebound/compression adjus. coilovers and you'll obliterate everything on the track(except other miatas of course:0The engines can be junk-yard boosted for cheap...but I dunno what your "roadster" class allows. do cowl induction, 16018deg advance w/premium, and a roadstersport exhaust and call it good as far as "power" goes. you can also go to the 1.8l for some added grunt. but doing the swap will cost just as much as a good turbo setup.

949racing.com makes the best wheels for the miata IMO...6ULs. Light, super strong, and look awesome for not much money. wish they would make wider sizes for 15" though...widest is 7.5 i beleive.

A roll bar will help stiffen up the chassis and are easy to install...but look into a butterfly brace as well as "frog" arms to really tighten it up. You can easily make your own butterfly brace out of steel square tubing too(The frame rails are 1.25 inches wide)

Welcome to the world of Miati

Do you want to build a trackable car or are you going to slam it? When you see super-low Miatas, they aren't going to be something you'll be taking to track days. Nothing wrong with either, but it's one or the other.

I just sold my 1990. Watch out for the SNC, do the TDC check when you purchase to be sure. Hard to argue with a $900 car though, they're great fun.

I imagine it'll should perform well for minimal amounts of monies. To answer your question, I am planning on tracking the car in hopes that I dont have to use the Silvia for circuit work anymore. Drift only. The balance Im sure Ill love but the power concerns me a little bit. Sure, itll be a lot of fun I imagine. But I like a little power. I dont need 350 or anything, but a solid 185 whp would be nice.

How much do they really weigh?

hardtop or rollbar, 'nabes, seats, wheel, coils, swaybars/bushings....nom nom nom nom

flyinmiata.com has some good stuff it seems

Owned.

I've also stripped one down to the tub and put it back together. I'd say I have a good idea of how they work.

My main Miata advice consists of:Buy one from the South/Southwest. They're so much cheaper it's unreal. If you invert the A-arms slamming them too low I'm going to irradiate your testicles.

That said you can't go wrong with ANY year. Drive a 1.6L and a 1.8L. They have markedly different personalities. Calling them NA6s or NA8s is weird, though. Unless you're hanging out with the overly slammed, overly cambered Miata-ruining crowd.

Dont be. I'm 186cm (a smidge over 6'1") and I have a huge noggin, so my helmet is large. I fit decently in them on track days, no more uncomfortable than my Corolla. Also remember you can get/fab chopped seat rails.

Yeh my 10 year old brother collected them when my family went there some years ago.180hp is a very easy goal to attain with any turbo set-up. An mp62 set-up will get you there too...but it's a but more expensive.

6UL is making up to 15x9 wheels now. http://949racing.com/15x9wheels-clickhere.aspx

I've seriously been stuck on NA Miatas for ages. Every time I see one I want to offer the owner my s13 for it. I'd love to build a csp Miata just to have a legitimate reason to run ITB's on one.
