Hello guys,I’m a new coupe owner and new even newer in this forum.

I’m focusing this question to Mexican cars because only one model / configuration of coupe was imported into Mexico.

I have seen two different cars [one at the dealer and my car] and neither of them tour on the passenger air bag indicator.

Question:The other "Mexican" coupes have the light enabled / on at any point? I want to find out if my car is defective or if the classification system was removed from the cars that were exported to Mexico.

Looking for your comments…Wazo

Wazo, Welcome!

I don't think we have many Mexico drivers here.

Is the feature on the dashboard? If your wondering why its not lighting up, it only comes on if the passenger sitting in the seat is below a certain weight (60 lbs I believe). It should also briefly illuminate when you start the vehicle as well.

Hello shift coupe ,

You are right; according to the US law the threshold is around that weight, sorry, do not have the requirements handy right now.

Please keep reading my reply to dessertdragon for further details.Wazo

Hello desert dragon,

To make a long story short:

- Went at my local dealer [left the car around the corner] and ask for a “passenger air bag check” appointment: “In two weeks, it’s the best we can do” … please note I did not mention for what type of car.

- Went with two US dealers next day: “The car defective, we can check it but you will loose your warranty since is a Mexican car”

- Get back with my local dealer [the very next day after the first visit] and this time I just drove the car into the service gate: 9 employees checking the car in less than 4 minutes including the service manager. Their last word: The car was fine, the manual was incorrect. [That’s were I checked the other coupe that behaves the same].

- Next day I call Nissan costumer service: After checking with assembly plant they told me ALL MEXICANS ALTIMAS ’07 & ‘08 [coupe and or sedans] MUST light that display next to the vent to notify the status of the passenger airbag.

Right now I have a case number and Nissan is checking and trying to find out why the light is not working [can provide the case number if some one wants it].

Mexican Altima Coupe’s manual is explicit about the passenger classification system behavior. I suggest you to visit your dealer and call Mexican Nissan costumer service [01 800 w nissan] to file a claim.

Do you want better news? a) Tire pressure monitor system was not installed in my car [and is listed as standard in the manual].b) Seats heating: ripped out.c) Passenger seat is noisy as a “maraca” when not occupied [plenty o people have complain about this and Nissan claim not to be aware of any problem].d) When cold started and set into reverse or drive at slow speed the car have the same rattling that many have report… again Nissan claim not to be aware of any problem.

Let’s say I’m not the happiest Nissan’s costumer right now, that are trying to find the issues, but I’m not happy at all.

Hello flebrija! In Juarez, Chihuahua, largest state in Mexico. How does you care behave? I guess there is no light for passenger airbag right?

Update with the issue:

Yesterday I received call with “the final conclusion of the assembly plant”: Coupes that were imported into Mexico are not equipped with “advanced passenger classification system”. So I asked them: What kind of classification system they have? Answer: NONE [That means airbags ready to deploy all the time, like it used to be 10 years ago!!!].

Up to that point everything was fine; the issues start when I ask the Nissan representative the following question:

If the car has not a classification system at all what is the use of the bladder installed in the seat… or what is the pipe with clear fluid under the seat?

His answer: “What pipe? What bladder? I got to look for that info”

When I asked then will they sent the new manuals with all the error corrected [tire pressure monitor system, passenger airbag active system, heating system for seats, etc etc etc] he just went: “uuuhhh… well, I am not aware we are sending corrected car manuals, let me look for that info and I’ll call you back”

P.S. Mexican coupe owners: Do you want XM radio in your car? Buy an aftermarket tuner because Nissan also removed the XM radio circuitry of the Bose system.

Again, the car is not that bad, far from being great but not bad, however, Nissan Mexico have A LOT of opportunities to improve their cars, their knowledge of the cars they are selling/building and the documentation they provide to their costumers.

Probably I’m just a picky costumer probably I’m just asking for what I paid for but for sure I’m not happy with Nissan right now.

WazoI understand where you are coming from, I do feel you pain, Since I live in Mexicali (the hottest city in the world ) and also own a mexican coupe.

However, the reason I bought the coupe basically is because of the VQ (v6) engine and the looks. The other features for me are nice to have, it doesn't bother if I don't have them.Passenger airbag is a safety feature, it is important that it deploys when needed, the light thing to me is a nice to have.TPMS, it is a convenience feature. I check my tire pressure on a regular basis. I will put more attention to it once I buy my rims and tires. To me is better not to have the TPMS, since I want to change rims and tires, this way I will not get the annoying light once I changed the rims with no sensors.XM radio, I really don't care for it (but that is just me)Heated seats, I had it on my 05 3.5 SE and hardly used it.

Regarding the user's manual, the one I have always added the statement after every feature "when equiped with" implying not all cars are equal.

My dealer did a fairly good job explaining me before I bought the car the differences between a US coupe and Mexican coupe (except for the heated seat). It is a common knowledge here in Mexicali that buying a new car in Mexico is more expensive than in the US (same equipments).

I am not bashing you for being upset with Nissan Mexico, I am just voicing my own opinion.

Enjoy your ride.

Hello Mexican Coupes.

No airbag light for me either. No heated seatsNo XM radio preparation

BUT... a lot of noices (passenger seatbelt, vibrations on passenger seat, random noise on the back of the car)

There's been some conversations about these subjects... do you have some of this problems (noises)?

Hi there:I have heard about the seatbelt noises, the passenger seat rattling noises on this forum.

But fortunately (knock on wood) I don't have these issues, and trust me, that is something living in this pothole country.

Hello desertdragon, I understand your point; trust me, I will really love to be a so easily pleased costumer; either my personality doesn’t help much or is the experience taken from my professional path [6 automotive engineering industry + in 3 aerospace] but I am not happy at all with that… Right now I easily prefer my old Z4.

Trust me, I have seen smaller companies [such as Chery not to mention high performance as Bugatti, McLaren, et al] to start recalls and costumer notifications for far less than a noisy seat or an incorrect user manual… In Mexico Toyota and Honda do an excellent job when a costumer complains is started.

I understand [not approve, just understand] that the salesman do not have full knowledge of what they are selling [for a dealer’s profit of $3000 USD… $1800 USD just for the seller they should know exactly what they are selling!] but when the “technical support service” in the country is not able to pull the full BOM and serial number of the component just with the car VIN is just disappointing…. Nissan US can do it and they even provide that info over the phone, why Nissan Mexico can not do the same?

…Never the less, as you suggest, I’ll try to forget about that and try to enjoy the ride.

Hello flebrija,

Apologies about the late answer, I have being out of town the last 3 weeks.

No issue was solved, Mexican Nissan costumer service never calls me back to follow up about the topic/complain. [Airbag]… at the end “no system installed” was their final answer and did not answer what is the pipe that came out of the passenger seat.

Talking about the rattling noise, I have booked and appointment with another dealership, in Chihuahua this time, for the following Saturday.Yesterday I drove the car for first time in 3 weeks and not the engine/CVT/couch/I do not what annoying sound is worst… some time ago it was there just on cold start for about 4-5 minutes and now is all the time, cold start, regular temperature etc etc etc.

The only “good” news about this is what I just read on the thread “Nissan Heat Shield Rattle” [zerothread/298502 … hopes that link works!] I’ll take that info and demand to see that section of the car with the mechanics.

By the way, I do not think that annoying sound came out of the CVT since with the car on park or neutral at low revs I still have the rattling, no so bad as when a load is applied [reverse or drive] but definitely a rattle.

Does your car have not presented this issue? I’m asking because mine did not have it when it was fresh out of the dealer and is getting worst and worst.

I’ll post the “results” next week. Happy holidays fellows!Wazo

Hello Wazo and Flebrija,

I am from Mexico also, I bought my altima in november and it is already at the dealer for warranty, the front suspension makes a really nasty sound when going over even the smallest bump, in short I am dissapointed and cannot enjoy the ride since I just don't trust it any more.

On the other hand, when I received it, all the documentation was wrong, and the dealer was givin excuses to not solving the problem, then I contacted Nissan Mexicana in writing; The very same day I droped the letter at the headquarters I received a call and was told the situation will be corrected, it was. My point is: let Nissan Mexicana know about your issues, they actually thank you for providing them with feedback.

Oh, by the way, I think is it good to write in English so american people know about these issues.

Regards!
