Rear differential under normal wear and tear can develop minute particles of metal dusting that look like steel and or bronze coloured.
Drain and refill with proper hypoid no additives, if LSD be sure to use LSD hypoid oil, with friction modifiers built in.
Run the vehicle as normal but every month test the hypoid for the correct level and check the rear brakes for hypoid grease oil slipping out the seals. If after 2-3 checks the level is up and no dropping of hypoid oil level, change out at 2 year interval.
Make sure to check the rear diff for leaks also.
Hypoid oil must be clean and not blackened, if dark it is in too long. It is a cheap lubricant and so the diffs both front and rear can be changed every 2 years.
When removed check the bottom of the container, the flecks of metal are wear between the crown and pinion and the bronze is the wear of the protection device within. A little wear is normal and without dismantling hard to distinguish but routine change out and inspection of the oil contents is a good indicator.
The oil left in from a new vehicle is better to be changed out than to leave in. Hypoid oil has a long life but it is cheap and adds peace of mind to you when changed out.
The use of the correct grade and LSD qualities are critical with a limited slip differential. You can check your rear end for these qualities with all oil out by hand turning left or right wheel and see which way the other turns.
While turning the wheel feel for vibration, test the rotational moves at the wheel, at the diff at the prop and listen to the crown and pinion for rough meshing.
With the turned wheel and the opposite wheel going in the same direction feel for slop and differences in rotation of each, the clutching of a slip is hard to feel for but when all done and with proper fill up of lubes a rear end on a wet surface under high torque application both wheels should turn with the left slightly behind.
In a very sharp turn can you feel the rear wheels fighting each other? Be gentle but firm on the throttle as you turn, as soon as you feel the grinding let up and straighten the wheel. This will indicate LSD operation as the wheels try to spin in the same direction but because you are turning, each wheel has a different length and speed to travel through. Take your time and check it out under very careful and thoughtful process.
The LSD is used to equate wheel spin of right and left wheels but this depends on torque application, speed and direction, be aware of what you do during the inspection of this simple yet complex design.
