It's hard to say without seeing the car what's making the noise and causing your rotor to wear near the edge. If the tech is correct that your pads still have some life left in them, then there could be something rubbing against your rotor like the splash shield or maybe even a clip that is holding in a pad, though the clip would not be near the outside edge of the rotor.
I suggest a second look at the pads to ensure that they have friction material left and that the wear indicators have not yet hit the rotor. While doing this, isolate the noise (left or right) if possible and look for something rubbing your rotor.
If you decide to move forward with a brake job, I would recommend Infiniti of Scottsdale for the OEM pads -- good prices, good service, very reliable. I have found that it's best to shop around for rotors -- maybe Autozone, NAPA, or Advance. I've used inexpensive rotors on the race track and found them to stand up as well as expensive ones, so I feel that buying OEM rotors is not worth the extra money, especially for a street car. Just my opinion.
Good luck finding your problem.
