Hi Guys,

I am driving 1995 J30.

Finally the metal against metal noise comes from my left front brake. Though, squeazing noise has been on and off for some time. I hold the brake job, cause my mechanic did say that my pad are good enough for another year, though he can also hear the noise from the left front brake part while the wheel is rolling in the shop.

Another thing I noice is the edge of the left front rotor is like being machined by something, I mean something touches the rotor.

I am really thinking of getting my brake job done soon.

Here are some question I have:

Where to get OEM pad and rotor at fair price? Seems member here can get some promotion for purchase.

And anyone one know of J30 mechanic in Richmond, VA?

Thank you very much.

Hi Guys,

And the noise is really loud when I start the car and driving at a low speed, but not any noise when I step on the brake and slower the car.

Seems that the noise also comes out after I make a left turn and then accelate my car. But when the car is at a high speed the noise is gone.

Please help me with this. I really appreciate it.

It's hard to say without seeing the car what's making the noise and causing your rotor to wear near the edge. If the tech is correct that your pads still have some life left in them, then there could be something rubbing against your rotor like the splash shield or maybe even a clip that is holding in a pad, though the clip would not be near the outside edge of the rotor.

I suggest a second look at the pads to ensure that they have friction material left and that the wear indicators have not yet hit the rotor. While doing this, isolate the noise (left or right) if possible and look for something rubbing your rotor.

If you decide to move forward with a brake job, I would recommend Infiniti of Scottsdale for the OEM pads -- good prices, good service, very reliable. I have found that it's best to shop around for rotors -- maybe Autozone, NAPA, or Advance. I've used inexpensive rotors on the race track and found them to stand up as well as expensive ones, so I feel that buying OEM rotors is not worth the extra money, especially for a street car. Just my opinion.

Good luck finding your problem.

Bill

The noise is happening because of insufficient brake lubricant at all the neccessary point.

What the? Your pads are used-up, to the point of damaging a rotor.Any shop can do your brakes. Stay away from national chains.

Thank you very much for the response from Billc, DominickJ30, and Defiant. Appreciate your sharing and diagnose.

I think I will have mechanic look at brake again. Though I am really confused about where to.

I trired Firestone months ago, they told me I have to change to pad and rotor, they don't even think about machine the rotor and they quote some kind of state law about this.

As I said in my previous post, my mechanic have it checked and told me the pads are good enough for another year.

I will stop by a shop close by tomorrow and have them help to find out the source of the noise. Though, seldom do they offer free checking on it.

I remember Firestone did offer me free check but it seems that they ask me to have a lot of extra work done on my car.

Thanks again for all the help from you guys.

Machining a rotor is really not recommended as it removes strength from the rotor. I would be very pleased if your state has laws against this. It truly shows it is out in the best interest if motorists.

Hi Guy,

The irritating noise from the car finally push me to get the brake job done.

The mechanic show me the pad, front and rear, and the rear pads are worse than the front ones. Though I was sure that I heard the noise from the front, they told me it is from the rear and recommend to replace the rear pad.

I had them replaced at a price about $140, for my J 30 , parts and labor. Not sure it is a fair price. They used some Akebono pads 230. I don't know what that means.

And the noise now is gone. The funny thing is they state in my invoice that there can still be some noise even after the replacement. Is this normal?

Anyway, the noise is gone now and hopefully not come out again.

Thanks for the sharing of ideas of you all.

yea, it is normal to have some noise after the brake pads get replaced. but not like the noise u were experiencing prior to it. it should just be like a slight squeaking of the brakes when you stop, or when ur just letting off the brakes slightly to more forward in traffic. that should last about 2-3 weeks with regular driving, once it starts.
