remeber a few months back reading someone telling way to see if new guides were installed on a 92 engine, but for the life of me I can not find the post- Purchased a 91 engine with 100K on it - from what I can see it appears the guides are metal backed with plastic across them, though I have worked on a Q45 so not sure if what I am seeing is the correct part . FWIW- I was told the guides were replaced with the updated metal backed design. The inspection plate on the front of the engine has new sealant, but the timing covers have the gray sealant- does that tell me anything? Thanks Andy

The thread you want to view is in IOM. IF you remove the timing covers, you will be able to tell, but you may not be able to tell if the tensioners and oil pump drive chain were also replaced. You may want to read also Q45tech's posts on how T-3 selects and reahabilitates JDM take out VH45DE.

RTV colors are not conclusive of chian guide status.

Won't RTV color at least tell you if it has been removed or not? When Keith checked mine, he just looked and said that the cover had never been removed.

Oh well, glad I don't have to worry about those guides anymore.

It may or may not. As I understand it the standard Nissan RTV is blue but other colors have been seen on uncracked timing covers/valve covers as well. They use what they have at the factory, and if they run out of blue they'll use red or black. It's true of any manufacturer. They won't stop the line because they don't have any blue left. The best way to tell is the condition of the seal. Old silicone fades and can become more brittle than original. Even then it's a stretch.

What did you discover about the guides?
