I've been searching all day and finally have a question that I can't find the answer to. (BTW, you find interesting stuff using the big red flashing search button up there.) I heard that the 90-93 Qs had metal door handles and the 94-96 are not. Is that true? Are they interchangeable? Also, the 94-96 door handle has a light around the key hole. Does the 90-93? The reason I ask is...well metal seems better than non-metal for long life.

AND...my infiniti dealer service records must be archived as the local dealer can't pull them up. What's the number for corporate that can fax these to me?

I remember a guy a couple years ago who swapped handles, but I'm a bit fuzzy on it and I can't find the thread.

I did find this one:

zerothread?id=74588

I'll have to check mine with a magnet sometime - they sure don't feel like plastic, though.

I can't believe I couldn't find that thread. I did look. I swear. Don't flame me Brian.

Magnet, good idea.

Ah, I was gonna tell you ... the oldest threads are in Infiniti General Archived. Don't forget to look there. And sometimes, the search terms are only mentioned in the Post Bodies ... aggravating ... easy to forget that.

Dealer can obtain archived records, it just take a couple of days.

Infiniti Customer Service will only read the records to you.

94 Handles are metal.

Local hot-rodders put them on their customs, love to chrome and simple look.

Checked mine with a magnet tonight. Confirmed what Jeff Williams told me - plastic. Mine was manufactured 4/94.

Now, it appears that some 94-96 have metal and some do not. I wonder what and when the difference occured. BTW, mine are not metal on the inside or outside.

Of course, plastic would be lighter

I sure wouldn't go swapping them out unless yours get crappy looking... they're kind of a pain - especially getting the lock cylinder out. My 90 has the lighted key hole...

Yes - post 94 Qs have plastic handles. This was a disappointment to me after owning a 92. Earlier Qs also have nicer headliners as well - don't know about the 93 (most visible cost savings measure was monotone interior, but don't know if they took out the nicer headliner).

Don't see why you could not swap. If I had more time I'd consider this mod.

There are many non magnetic cast alloys of aluminum and magnesium.About 70% of elements on the periodic chart are classified as METALS.

Good point Dennis. Maybe it is just a different type of metal.

Correct.Only ferrite (iron) is magnetic, or alloys with ferrite in them.

My '94 Q45t had metal handles. They were probably "pot metal (Zinc alloy?), or possibly chrome plated aluminum. I seriously doubt that any Q45s have plastic door handles.
