If you disconnect the battery for 5 minutes and reconnect, it should be reset.

But if you still get the same message it could mean either bulbs or it could be that the sending unit in the trunk needs to be serviced.(Serviced being resoldered)

Not all the times off the shelf bulbs will fix the problem. The message should clear as soon as you press the brake pedal... The sockets could be bad..

Whenever you do the bulbs replace them all.

I read the FSM and didn't realize the display unit had warnings for "Stop Lamp Inoperative" and "Brake Lamp Inoperative".

It really is important to use OEM bulbs or at least Sylvania Long Life. I cheaped out a couple of months ago and used the Napa LL bulbs. The message went away for a few weeks but came back as soon as the bulb contacts (lead solder?) started melting again.

Also take a look at the brake lamp modules that hold the bulbs. Unless you pais a mechanic, you've probably already had them out to change the bulbs. No tools are required. Take a look at the female sockets. Are they melting or flat? Worst yet, has the excess heat gone to the wiring and made it brittle or scorched? If the answer is yes to any or all of the above you are probably going to have to rebuild or replace the modules to clear the warning messages.
