Hey everyone,

I need some ideas or help with this issue.

I've recently installed a mesh grille for my versa. Sanded it down and painted it a flat black. But the paint is chipping. The Mesh is not chrome, as stated by the seller off ebay and is only a shiny silver.

Any ideas so I dont have to keep it a silver, i want it black!

It's going to chip, you can't really stop that, only delay it with coats and coats of paint.

Did you prime it before painting? and did you wipe it down with alcohol to rid any grease or oil you've left on it from handling prior to painting?

Priming it wont prevent chipping. Powdercoating is when you take an item, put an electric current through it, spray a special type of paint that is attracted to the current to have it adhere to the item and then bake it. It produces a very durable paint coat.

Sanding isn't enough. Priming will help adhesion... as will wiping it down with mild solvent (alcohol) after sanding to remove oil or grease. Sand, clean and prime are essential steps in painting.

Powder coating is a process where parts are first stripped of paint (if already painted, chemically or media blasting) then the said part (has to be metallic) is electrically charged. Then, the paint (in the form of a fine resin powder) is sprayed on to the electrically charged part. Because of the electrical charge the powder is attracted to and evenly distributed over the part. The coated part is then baked in an oven where the powder melts. The resulting finish is a very durable resin coat (like epoxy). Look in your local phone book and look under powder coating, or call a trusted body shop and ask for recommendations. For a piece like the grill, prices will probably be in the neighborhood of $40 to $80 USD including media blasting/stripping. Price varies depending on the color you pick. Standard flat black or glass black should be among the least expensive powders.

Try using google next time, it works. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powder_coating

Why? He asked the question and it was answered by two people (yourself included, good answer BTW). If you don't want to answer then you don't have to, thus posting the link is just more effort. At least now the OP understands.

OP, the comments above concerning primer and powder coating are spot-on. Do one or the other. Personally I would look into powder coating as it will last longer. Of course, there is probably added cost. Your call.

Why? because in this day and age it's incredibly easy to find answers. Having a habit to seek out answers on your own before asking for it to be served up on a silver platter is always a good thing.

Initiative is always lacking. If people had the initiative to find out on their own then there would really be no need for online forums, at least any with relevant information.

Not true. Forums are best suited for specific info, they have their place. Quality of forums are better when each individual take the initiative to seek out information on their own/educate themselves... then contribute in a meaningful way. It will be richer in content. It shouldn't be used like google or wiki, both of which exist for a reason.

As I stated, initiative is always lacking (and it gets worse each year). Some are lazy and some simply want opinion/answer from those they trust (which seems to be the case here). The option of a member is to either answer the question or ignore the question. Ignoring the question may instigate initiative.

That's the biggest reason why I haven't posted much on NICO recently.

The answers are there, you have any additional questions?

Threads going offtopic are fine as long as the answer has been presented. This is a community and discussions will sidetrack at times just like they do in normal discussions. What needs to stop here is jumping down peoples throats who want to modify their vehicles. I've seen too much of that lately.
