Whe I bought my car 91 LE 5sp (back after buying it new and selling it several years ago), I found a previous owner must have installed a hi power amp etc... At least one wire from the stereo is melted all the way through the harness to the main junction at the driver side floor area. I think it is the illumination wire. Problems I'm having are: 3 idiot light stay on; (Anti-lock, battery and brake) unless the headlight and/or parking light switch is turned on. Then the idiots lights go out. It is also found the battery is not charging unless the headlight switch is on. The alternator is tested as being good, but found current is going to both connectors on the main alt. harness connector at the alt., when the headlight switch is on. The speedometer also does not work, possibly related.

Sorry so long, but does anyone have any advice suggestions other that buying a new harness. Anyone do extensve repairs to theirs with any advice??? Can a melted wire cause the above problems?? Thanks much, Bill

Bill,A fryed wire could definitly screw with lights, dash etc.... The wire could have fryed and melted other wires when it did. All those wires are probably touching each other now and causing all kinds of electrical problems.

I have re-wired my 240sx harness in the driver side fenderwell 3 times now, rubbing from my tire ate up the wires under hard cornering. Re wiring is not that hard if all the wires are still intact, if they arent it is tricky to match all of them. You can rewire your car back to normal fairly easily, aslong as the harness isnt broken in hard to reach areas.

You need a sawdering (spelling?) tool, good wire, something good to cut wire with.... actually just go and buy a "Electric Wiring Set", they are available at most auto stores and include everything you would need except for the sawdering tool.

It is a pretty forward fix, when you see it and have your hands on it you will understand how to fix the harness. Remember to use those heat shrink tubes over all sawdering points.

Be like Nike - Just do it ;)

later,nils

oooohh... I forgot.

Also check all your fuses, but do that after you go over all wiring and fixed it. Do not put fuses in first since it is most likely that the harness will blow them up as soon crank it up.

hey there nils... did you reroute the wires that you had to fix in your fenderwell or did you just move them... do you know if there are any connections on the harness that can be disconnected to reroute the fenderwell wiring harness?

Holy S**t, my hood cable is shreding too... the wires have not broken yet but i don't want them to... much appreciation
