Anyone on here done it yet? I am doing the RB20 swap this winter and someone mentioned that I should just run megasquirt from the start. So I was just wondering if anyone on here had used it yet on their RB and any good or bad experiences they had from it. Thanks

i think its pretty new to the RB side

but from what i hear its being used a good amount on other engines (ae86s, volvos...)

sounds like an awesome system for the money.

Ya a bunch of people around here in Omaha use it with great success. And for the money I thought it would be worth it to use it from the start when I get the RB in over the winter. Just wanted to see what nissan people have to say about it.

I was at the dyno last weekend with my borhter and his GTP and the guy who ran before us was running it on his 260z w/ 280zx 2.8 turbo motor. He was running 298 horse @4500 but he started to run lean so they didn't run it to redline.

It sounds great for the $$

dumb question but what is a megasquirt?..if i had to guess I would say it was something you install that squirts water on the radiator and intake, am I right?......if so you can make one of those with a sprinkler and your windshield wiper squirter ( or what ever you call it)

megasquirt is like a stand-alone, and you do the wiring and everything else then i think you also have to solder some stuff(don't think on this 1), its a cheaper alternative to the AEM EMS or the Tec3.

i know couple of people run it on V8's i think.

Yea you have to make the wiring harness and solder the circuit board together. So its more for the DIY'er but sounds like if your willing to do the work its worth it.

Would this be very hard to instal for a beginner? I got help with my RB20 wiring.. I'm not intimidated by the actual tuning part of MS, but i am however thoroughly freaked out about the instalation.

For the price of a damn SAFC2, this is on my list for next mod, but I'd like to know if I'm getting in way over my head.

Idk, I am just getting into this wiring thing myself (will be tackling it this winter) from what I understand building the harness and board isnt real difficult if you know how to solder. I guess there is a bunch of info on the megasquirt board about putting it together. I guess tuning it isnt real hard either, I mean last night I was watching someone go through the menus and I didnt seem all that difficult, just would take some time. I guess thats the one downfall, doing all the labor to get the system set up and installed and tuned would take time. So I guess if you have the time to set it all up its a great system. Now like I said this is all coming from friends I know that have it in various cars from turbo'd mustangs to DSMs. I posted this on here to see if any RB guys had used it yet. If not I will giving it a shot this winter.

I say go for it. Megasquirt is probably the best deal out there.

just the fact this is new to the RBs and you admit your intimidated by it, id suggest staying away (or even waiting)

once it gets around on our cars, im sure people would be able to answer the definite questions that are gonna come up.

There is no one running the MegaSquirt on a RB as we speak. My friend and me are installing one on my RB25 right now and should be the first. I will let everyone know how it goes. We will be controlling spark and fuel....It is going to consist of the Edis6 for ignition.

The biggest problem that I can see at this point is the coilpacks on the RB series motors. Megasquirt can't run them as they are. Picture YOU having to program the chip to tell the ignitor when to fire!! (eek!) It does support the Ford EDIS ignition systems though. There are EDIS 6's and 8's so a little ingenuity could allow the RB20 to use that ignition setup.

You just have to run the ford edis6 module, wasted spark coil, the sensor, gear wheel, and some spark wires.

I got the module, wasted spark coil, and the an Edis gear wheel for $22 at a junk yard....Gomer, go to South U-Pull-It...they have a bunch of Edis6 setups. You have to have the actual Edis6 module, but can run 4,6,8cyl wasted coil, and it doesn't matter what gear and sensor you get, they all interchange and all work together.

Great, that's what I thought. Could you tell everyone what car(s) you got (or can get) it off of. This thread could be really good info for anyone who decides to give it a go. I'm sure I will eventually.

Awesome....glad to see that there are others doing this other then me. He did the same thing I was doing with the Ford Edis6 and the gear. Thanks for the find.
